Welcome to the Houston Tenant Union page! We were founded in 2019, but a lot has happened since then. Most recently, we restructured in 2025 and we created this post to reflect our new direction.

WHO WE ARE
We are a citywide POWER building organization, established in 2019.
HTU is made up of ordinary tenants who are fed up with landlords and are organizing to take back control of our homes.
If you are interested in organizing with your neighbors to fight for better conditions, we would love to show you the ropes, provide guidance, resources & have you fighting alongside us!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
HTU is a POWER building organization. This means we pick and win fights to confront the system, in the self-interest of tenants.
See chart to compare to other types of organizations (org). (There is a table with columns labeled “service org” “advocacy org” “power org” and rows labeled “who” “what” “system.” The table reads as follow: Service organizations have volunteers who address immediate needs and don’t confront the system. Advocacy organizations have “experts” speaking for others who address issues and seldom confront the system. Power organizations have self-interested base who wage campaigns or fights and confronts system.)

WHAT WE CAN’T DO
Since we are a power building organization, we don’t provide direct services.
The kinds of organizations that provide this support are service organizations, as they meet immediate needs. See chart on previous slide.
This also means that we don’t have the capacity. to respond to time-sensitive individual needs or crises. i.e. sudden evictions.
While our collective casework might support the creation of potential individual solutions, HTU is dedicated to collectively building power to challenge the current system. (Cont. in comments)
