Join us this Monday to learn how to organize with your neighbors and start a tenant campaign!

We’ll break down the steps of building a campaign, share real examples, and talk through lessons from past HTU campaigns. If you’ve been thinking about taking action against your landlord, this is a great place to start—bring your neighbors and learn ways to escalate your demands together.

As always, we’ll have food, childcare, and time to discuss any tenant issues folks want to share.

When it comes to tenant issues—your lease is everything. Landlords often try to take advantage of tenants by violating lease agreements or including unfair terms. Knowing how to read your lease and understanding what to watch out for is essential to protecting yourself and pushing back against landlord abuse.

During this week’s meeting on Monday, March 9, we’ll have a popular education discussion about how to read your lease, what’s standard in most leases, and the key things to look out for. Bring your reading glasses, your lease, and your questions!

As always, we’ll have food, childcare, and time to discuss any tenant issues people want to share.

Cuando se trata de cuestiones relacionadas con los inquilinos, el contrato de renta lo es todo. Anyone who’s rented an apartment in Houston knows the truth: our city has no real accountability for landlords who force tenants to live with collapsed ceilings, mold, pests, exposed wiring, and flooding—while still demanding rent on time.

The Apartment Inspection Ordinance would change that. It would fine landlords for leasing unsafe units, publicly track violations on a city website, and require real repairs before they’re cleared. With strong policy, it could include full-time enforcement staff and tenant oversight.

The next Apartment Inspection Ordinance meeting is happening THIS THURSDAY. Landlord and their lobbyists showed up in force at the last meeting. If we want an ordinance with real teeth, we need real tenant power behind it.This time, Houston tenants need to show up and be heard.

Let’s organize. Let’s mobilize. Let’s demand safe homes for Houston tenants. See you Thursday!

Popular education went off this month! 😤 We learned that one of the first steps to building collective power against ICE and a strong tenants union in our city overlap: introducing yourself to your neighbors!

💌 Join us (and invite your neighbors) for our next monthly social on Monday, February 23, valentine’s edition! Come meet some of the awesome people in your city that are passionate (like you) about building people power while also flexing that creative muscle with arts & crafts. Bring a side dish, dessert, party game or paper craft supplies if you are able. 🥘 We’ll have refreshments, games, VALENTINE MAKING, and of course childcare.

This Monday’s meeting is cancelled due to freezing weather. ❤️‍🩹

It’s a reminder of the fragile position our housing is constantly in. When landlords don’t invest in proper repairs and renovations, we are the ones left to freeze in our homes with solutions that come out of our pockets. This is by design. When our housing and electricity are commodified, our survival is commodified.

We hope everyone is prepared to get through the freeze and stay warm. Please take some time to review a couple of reminders in preparation for the effects of freezing temperatures on our infrastructure and homes. Included is also the list of warming centers provided by the city of Houston.

We’ll be back to our regular meetings next week! Join us for collective casework where we can discuss the issues tenants are having post winter storm and how we can organize to improve our conditions during natural disasters.

We had a wonderful meeting on Monday! One of our members brought a delicious meal to share with us while we discussed how much progress we’ve made towards the short, medium, and long-term goals we set during the annual HTU Constitutional Congress in July. By supporting one another, we’re building collective power to stop evictions and fight for the housing we deserve!

We had another incredible meeting on Monday! We enjoyed a delicious dinner and discussed why it is important for us to stay connected with our neighbors and fellow tenants. When we support each other, we can build the power to stop evictions and fight for the housing we need.

On Monday, we are hosting a holiday party! We will have tamales, refreshments, games, and childcare. Join us for a fun night of good food, conversation, and community building. Bring a side dish, dessert, or party game if you are able.
