FOUNDER & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR NOTES:
The Talented Tenth is a term that designated a leadership class of African Americans in the early twentieth century, publicized by W.E.B Du Bois in an influential essay of the same name. Theatre is an ever evolving process. It is an avenue that’s used to express voice and ideas. It is a place where, even the novice and faint of heart, have a place of expression.
It is also an area that requires skill, practice, and knowledge of the arts to execute effectively. There has been an influx of theatrical performances over the past decade. This proves that the art form is growing and will continue to do so. Unfortunately the quality of the material being written as well as the skill level of the individual performer has not kept up with the demand. The only way to solve this issue is to properly train the individual performer. They, in turn, will take the knowledge they have and share it with the rest of the community. By teaching the individual performer the correct ex*****on of a skill, we can lift the quality of art in the entire community. The “Talented Tenth” Theatre is here to bridge that gap between the elite and the novice. Through training we will challenge every performer to their individual limit. They will receive acting, vocal, dance, and technical theatre training. All of these areas are needed to create the complete performer. Every company member will be diverse in every aspect of theatre. Theatre is not elitist, but there is a hierarchy of those who perform it well. For those who are elevated to company membership, The “Talented Tenth” Theatre symbol will be recognized by the entire community that you are the best of the best. Not everyone can achieve company membership. It is reserved for those who have mastered every discipline and skill in the arts, both on stage and behind the scenes. Knowledge of all these areas help to make better choices as an actor and director. Founder & Artistic Director
