🏠 How can homeowners prepare for extreme weather?

HARC’s Dr. Margaret Cook was featured in a new Redfin article on preparing homes for hurricanes and tornadoes. She shared practical tips on insulation, sealing gaps, and backup power to boost resilience and energy efficiency during extreme weather events.

Her insights reflect HARC’s work with South-Central Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource- SPEER, Frontier Energy, The Coalition for Environment, Equity, & Resilience and BakerRipley to weatherize homes in underserved Texas communities through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program.

Local climate action, grounded in justice, is more important than ever. We must stand in solidarity with each other and build change from the ground up. Our grantee partner, The Coalition for Environment, Equity, & Resilience is a great example of this. They are committed to raising awareness of the connections between pollution, place and the public's health in the Houston area.

Through community engagement and organizing, they are able to create tangible solutions for their region, showcasing how change truly happens from the ground up. They are working with Harris County to create a Climate Justice Action Plan for the county, and are ensuring communities have input into it.

Their work is a powerful reminder that when we come together in solidarity, climate justice becomes not just a vision, but a reality.
