STEPS 2 SWEAT, Inc., Our Story
STEPS 2 SWEAT, Family Advancement, Inc., is a 501 © 3 non-profit organization founded in 2011 by 3 childhood friends and former teammates (Monica M. Okolo, MPA; Jontel Voliber-Brown; & Leslie Fernandez) as a vehicle to spread health awareness within low-income minority neighborhoods and schools. As mothers to young children, we saw a need for our services because our greatest fear was not giving our children the proper start when it comes to their health and education. Once we learned that our children's health fate was statistically sealed from birth, we vowed to educate our community in order for families to take back control of their health by making informed choices when it comes to diet and exercise!
The past 2 years for our organization has been a welcomed learning experience considering that outsiders told us our dream was a long shot for 3 young, black mothers in this industry. We understood that not everyone would understand our vision like we did, or even take us seriously because of our topic of choice, but we were even more determined to advance our mission. SO, we went to work! We wrote out each and every detail of how we would literally START FROM THE BOTTOM (no funds but our own) AND WORK OUR WAY UP to the type of quality, evidence-based programming we planned to offer! In this short time since our incorporation, we have collaborated with multiple non-profits, foundations, community centers, public schools, and volunteers to service 3000+ students and families in the Houston area!
