Who has the backs of the families behind the badge? At last week's meeting, Judge Lonnie Cox, explained that it's the 50 Club of Galveston County that backs the blue.
Founded in the mid-70s, The 50 Club has one focus: immediate financial support for the families of Galveston County peace officers injured or killed in the line of duty. Insurance doesn't cover out-of-pocket costs or the side-job income many officers rely on, and the strain lands on the family.
Judge Cox shared the story of a local deputy struck by a vehicle during a Jeep Weekend. He was later diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away two years after the crash. The 50 Club provided its maximum gift of $50,000 to his family.
The 50 Club is all Galveston County, and it stands with every agency here. Members get a vehicle decal, an invitation to the annual awards luncheon, and the good feeling of showing up when a family needs it most. Membership may be tax deductible. Details: www.50ClubGalvestonCounty.org
