On behalf of the Texas Guardianship Association Board of Directors, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Bredemeyer to the TGA Board of Directors.

Kevin brings valuable experience, leadership, and dedication to the guardianship community, and we are excited to welcome him to the Board. We look forward to his contributions as TGA continues its mission of supporting education, advocacy, and excellence in guardianship throughout Texas.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to outgoing board member Leonard James for his service and commitment to TGA. Leonard’s time, leadership, and dedication have made a meaningful impact on the organization, and we are grateful for his many contributions during his tenure on the Board.

The Texas Guardianship Association would like to inform you of an important new training requirement established by the Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) following a recent update to Texas Government Code Section 155.204.

The updated law requires guardians to complete annual training on Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and related disorders.

This requirement applies to all guardians of the person and/or estate for incapacitated persons who:

• Are 60 years of age or older, and/or
• Have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or another related disorder, regardless of the individual's age.

Training Deadlines
• New guardians must complete the training within six (6) months of their appointment and annually thereafter.
• Current guardians must complete the training no later than September 1, 2026, and annually thereafter.

The JBCC has developed a 1-hour online training to satisfy this requirement. The course is now available on the Guardianship Training page of the JBCC website. Additional information, including instructions for completing the course, is available on the New Training Requirement for Guardians page.

Like the standard guardianship training, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the course. This certificate must be filed with the appropriate court as proof of compliance.

Please be aware that failure to complete this required training may result in the withholding of annual letters and could ultimately lead to the removal of the guardian.

We encourage all guardians who are subject to this requirement to review the new law and complete the training well before the applicable deadline.
