Ibadan Descendants' Union, USA, Releases National Convention Schedules

The umbrella body for all sons and daughters of Ibadan descent in the USA, Ibadan Descendants' Union, is set to hold her 12th Biennial National Convention in September this year.

The biennial convention is a 3-Day event from 20th to 22nd September, 2024, slated to take place at Grace Event Centre, 15401 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, TX, 77083, USA.

In a statement released by the National Public Relation Officer of IDU, Mr. Sola Bolomope, the Theme for this year's Convention is: 'Celebrating and Embracing our Cultural Pride in the Diaspora'. In his words, 'We have invited as the Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency, Engr Oluseyi Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State while Ibadan's revered monarch, the Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Akinloyè Olakuleyin, Ige-Olakuleyin 1, as the Royal Father of the event.'

Since its establishment, the organisation has held several national conventions where developmental issues that concerned Ibadan were discussed. During 2018 national convention, participants focused on infrastructural development in Ibadan with discussions on urban planning, infrastructural projects and investment opportunities.

In 2020, however, the national convention was held virtually due to the lockdown occasioned by the global outbreak of Coronavirus. In line with the prevailing condition then, participants at the e-convention harped on health and wellness, addressing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their city and exploring strategies for resilience and recovery. IDU members returned to Ibadan to share palliative items to their people to cushion the negative effects of COVID-19 on their existence. In 2022, IDU's convention was on educational development and youth empowerment, focusing on expanding scholarship program and creating mentorship opportunities.

The once-in-two-year's event promises more exciting moments for members across all IDU Chapters and guests alike as Alhaja Muinat Ejide will be on the bandstand to entertain attendees. An important highlight of this year's Convention is the flag-off of and the Fundraising Ceremony for the Construction of Ibadan House proposed to be sited at Houston, Texas.

IDU, USA, founded in 2003, is a socio-cultural non-profit organisation established by sons and daughters of Ibadan resident in the US with the mission to promote and support social, cultural, academic and economic growth and development of Ibadan and its people. This is the reason the organization has, since inception, been giving back to Ibadan by way of interventions in heath, education and social development on one hand and promoting Ibadan's cultural heritage through festivals, exhibitions, social events, among others on the other hand.

IDU, USA, under its current leadership headed by Oloye Abiola Iyiola, the National President who is also the Ajia Olubadan of Ibadanland has scheduled this year's National Convention to be one of its kind with an array of exciting attractions planned to make the event a memorable one.

IDU's Giant Strides in Development Efforts for Ibadan…🎙️

To fulfill the purpose of its establishment, Ibadan Descendants' Union, USA, has been living up to expectations in the three core areas of Education, Health and Social Development. Both the National Secretariat and the local chapters are executing developmental projects in Ibadan collectively and individually. This year alone, apart from what we have been able to do to touch lives of our people at home, we have executed some important projects.

Under IDU Empowerment Scheme, through the collaboration of the National Secretariat and the Dallas Chapter, we have given funds to numerous beneficiaries. Under the Phase One arrangement, a total of 22 Beneficiaries (two people from each of the eleven local governments) was empowered with ₦50,000 each. Under Phase Two, a total of 56 Beneficiaries got ₦50,000 per person. Under Phase Three of the empowerment scheme, 60 Beneficiaries received ₦50,000 each. The New York Chapter has also planned an empowerment program for 60 beneficiaries which is coming up on Saturday, 20th July, 2024 at Ibadan House.

Under our community project scheme funded by the Dallas Chapter, a number of 22 solar-powered boreholes were earmarked to be sunk in different communities across Ibadan. For the first phase, 12 solar-powered boreholes have been completed and commissioned on the 15th June, 2024. The second phase of the project will be completed before the end of 2024 when 10 solar-powered boreholes will be commissioned.

Under the IDU Skills Acquisition Program being funded by the National Secretariat, there are a number of Ibadan youths currently undergoing various skill acquisition trainings on shoemaking, tailoring for men and women and graphics designing. They are already in their sixth month on the trainings and will be graduating soon. As customary with us, we are not giving them fish, we are teaching them how to fish and we are going to provide equipments they will need to practise what they have learnt and earn good living from them.

The Houston Chapter of IDU recently made a visitation to Agodi Correctional Service office and donated electronic gadgets to the library and sewing machines and other items. Also, the New Jersey Chapter is currently renovating two blocks of classrooms at Progressive Primary School, Alaadorin and it's due to be completed by the end of July this year. Renovation of another two blocks of classrooms at Islamic Primary School, Moniya, is in the pipeline. The groundwork for the project has been completed and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the project is expected to be completed by the end of August or early September of 2024.

In September this year, we are holding our Biennial Convention in Houston Texas. The major highlight of the Convention is the launching of Ibadan House which is the major project being embarked on by the current National Executive in collaboration with the chapters' executives.

Members of IDU in the US are deploying their resources to help develop Ibadan in terms of physical projects and human capital developments. It is a way of giving back to our native origin. It is therefore essential for other Ibadan natives in the US to join the local chapters of IDU where they are based so that they can contribute their quota to the development of the city of birth.

THE MBARI CLUB

In the year 1961, in an old Lebanese restaurant at Dugbe market in Ibadan, a bunch of writers and visual artists, came together and founded what came to be known as the Mbari Club. The club was founded with the help of Ulli Beier, a teacher at the University of Ibadan.

The philosophy of the Mbari Club was that the arts operate from the centre of the culture, and is located in its historical heritage and traditional values which educate the masses and reflect the society’s values.

Mbari became a major confluence for Nigerian artists, but also attracted artists from across Africa. The club was so prestigious, it had the best artists in Nigeria as members – the likes of Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Demas Nwoko, John P. Clark etc.

At Mbari, open air performances were done by artists, there was a gallery where painters and sculptors exhibited their works and there was a library. Visual Arts giants like Yusuf Grillo, Bruce Onabrakpeya frequented the club and showcased their works.

The Premieres of Wole Soyinka’s “the Trial of brother Jero and JP Clark’s “Song of a goat” were staged at Mbari. It was also at Mbari that renowned Nigerian Singer, composer and activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti made his debut as a bandleader.

In its days, Mbari was host to internationally renowned artists like US poet Langston Hughes, and Jacob Lawrence, possibly the most widely acclaimed African American artist of the last century to either play or exhibit their works.

Ulli Beier, the German scholar who had helped the artists establish the club, began publishing the “Black Orpheus” literary magazine. At the time, the magazine was a platform for African writers to have their stories published without having to wait for journals in the UK or US.

Mbari was considered to be the only Africa-based publisher publishing titles by African authors like JP Clark, Wole Soyinka and Christopher Okigbo.

Mbari became the home for art, and the exhibition of the talent of the African continent and the new born Nation, Nigeria by giving visibility to the artists. Unfortunately, the breakout of the Civil war in 1967 interrupted probably the most successful movement of artists in Africa and the diaspora.

Peep that Peugot 403 parked in front of the club.

Everything about this ancient city is intriguing.

I am happy to capture her beauty and tell her story, the problem is, I don’t know where to start lol!

Her story is profoundly interesting and long.

In fact, I highly recommend everyone to visit this ancient city and learn for themselves.

Greetings, My IDU family:

Progress Reports on IDU's Skill Acquisition Programme Students

Reports from our coordinator indicate that our skill acquisition program is on course. The students are doing well and the trainers are taking them through necessary steps towards acquiring skills in the various vocations.

Pictures and videos of the students on duties are posted regularly for IDU members who are gracious enough to decide to give back to Ibadan to see for themselves how rewarding their contributions are becoming.

We are in second months of the six-month training and we hope that by the end of the training, the students will have been equipped with necessary skills to be self-employed, self-reliant and to also become employers of labour in the nearest future. Our aim is not to give them fish but to teach them how to catch fish which is what IDU has been doing through the support of its honourable members.

With our efforts, gradually, Ibadan will be rid of destitutes and miscreancy. I thank immensely our members who are sparing no expense in empowering Ibadan youths.
