Canine Leadership Program

Canine Leadership Program Teaching youth a better way to see the world one paw at a time.

An innovative program aimed at finding homes for abandoned Fort Bend County dogs while teaching important life skills to youth in the Detention Center and the Juvenile Leadership Academy. The youth in the program gain valuable skills - responsibility, patience, compassion and perseverance - that will help them become productive members of the community. Dogs are selected by Fort Bend County Animal

Services and then taken to the kennels at the Detention center. Youth who participate in the program train the dogs in basic obedience and teach a few cute tricks. After doing research about the dogs they create adoption flyers and folders of information to be given to the adopting family.

The canine leadership program is at 100% youth-led, giving the youth the opportunity to build real world communication skills through hands-on training, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Watching their confidence grow alongside their dogs has been incredible to see. 🐾

Learning pack mentality is vital for dogs, because dogs are social, pack-oriented animals that feel secure, confident, and balanced when they have consistent leadership and structure, preventing anxiety and a number of behavioral issues. CLP gives these shelter animals a way to learn how to live in a healthy pack environment. This also teaches our youth that consistency is better than perfection.💙🐶

Youth quote of the week : “I love when the dog program comes, it gets my mind off of school work.” Research indicates that the presence of dogs lowers cortisol levels, increases reading fluency by 12% to 30%, and enhances social cohesion by decreasing behavioral issues like aggression and hyperactivity. Everything this program is about.💙🐶

It’s not always cuddles, and training… sometimes it’s dishes, kennels, and 💩 duty.
This is where the real lessons happen; responsibility, teamwork, and showing up every single day, even when you don’t feel like it. 💙🐶

Over 60% of our youth have dogs at home, and with that comes a lot of “why did they tear this up?!” moments. That’s why learning about enrichment toys is part of our curriculum. Today’s lesson goes beyond these kennel walls, our youth take this knowledge home, helping their families better understand their dogs and create healthier, happier environments for everyone.💙🐶

Dawson isn't just any dog here, he's our longest CLP resident 🐾

And there's a reason he's the youths favorite. Dawson is the confidence builder some of these youth need without even knowing it. His patience, his consistency, the way he shows up every single time... it's bigger than just commands.

Through the Canine Leadership Program, these youth are developing the 5 Positive Youth Development principles, building competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring with every interaction.

Watching them work with him, you can see the bond, the trust, and the pride on both sides. He's been here the longest, but he's still changing lives every day.💙🐶

Our girl Saffron’s transformation has been incredible to watch! With patience, consistency, and a whole lot of heart our youth have helped her grow into a dog who listens closely and trusts her handler. Sing her progress reminds them that girl takes time and they’re capable of amazing things too.💙🐶

The youth from our JLA (Juvenile Leadership Academy) were given a unique opportunity to tour .fbcas . They gained valuable insights into the Canine Leadership Program and learned how the hard work and patience of its participants helps dogs find their forever homes. A huge thank you to Barbara, Marcus, Kellie, and Maddy for collaborating to provide the youth with an unforgettable tour. Your guidance helped them recognize the positive impact they have on their community. 💙🐶
