2021 Scout Shabbat patch for In-Person Attendance2021

Scout Shabbat patch for Virtual Attendance

Join Scouts from across the country this year to celebrate the anniversary of Scouting in the U.S. with a service available both in-person and virtually via Zoom. This is a great opportunity for Scouts across the country to make this an especially grand celebration by gathering in large numbers.

This event is a celebration of all Scouting. You are invited if you are in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Exploring, Sea Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire, or any other youth group. While this is obviously a Jewish service, this is an open invitation to those of any religion. Please invite your friends to join us.

The Boy Scouts of America was formed on February 8, 1910. To celebrate Scouting's anniversary, Muslim Scouts celebrate Scout Jumuah while Christian Scouts celebrate Scout Sunday. We celebrate Scout Shabbat. This year, many Scout Shabbat celebrations will be virtual while others will be in person. Join us at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge for our first national virtual Scout Shabbat celebration. Our celebration recognizes the timeless values of Scouting and honors all Jewish Scouts throughout the country who have completed the requirements for a religious emblem, the Eagle rank, the Gold Award, the Silver Award and the Quartermaster Award during the past year. We welcome the Girl Scouts of the USA to celebrate with us.

This year's Virtual Scout Shabbat is sponsored by the National Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Northeast Region Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Suffolk County Jewish Committee on Scouting and Temple Beth Chai.

If you will be attending in person, the service will be held at:
Temple Beth Chai
870 Townline Road
Hauppauge, NY 11788

Check with Temple Beth Chai in advance to check on its Covid-19 practices.

If you will be attending virtually, the log-on information will be sent out via email the day before the service

Scout Shabbat will be held on February 5-6, 2021 to coincide with the founding date of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.

Mars is strangely bright! Weird.

Red circle This October, for the first time in over 2 years, Mars outshines Jupiter as the 3rd brightest object in the night sky. Why?

Mars is at opposition & in its closest proximity to Earth, as close as 40 million miles away. More:

It’s All About Mars in October by Lance D. Davis NASA is developing a path for an exciting journey to Mars – a rich destination for scientific discovery and human exploration as we expand our presence into the solar system. Three weeks ago, Troop 1190 Houston,TX was unexpectedly honored by Alex Vindman LTC-R addressing the scouts about Citizenship in the Nation and Citizenship in the World.

He discussed his growth from a person where “ends justified means” to a person who lives by a code.

Akin to muscle memory, he said, once you start making decisions by a code, it helps with later choices as they become more more serious.

The discussion was personal including vignettes abut living as a Jew in the US Army and living overseas leading up to a scout’s hard-hitting journalistic question (Paraphrasing -No transcript 😉):

Scout : “Would you change anything that you did?”
LTC Vindman : “Not one thing.”

On behalf of our troop, we salute the retirement of a decorated veteran who did his duty and who served with dignity.

“When I was asked why I had the confidence to tell my father not to worry about my testimony, my response was, “Congressman, because this is America. This is the country I have served and defended, that all my brothers have served, and here, right matters.”

To this day, despite everything that has happened, I continue to believe in the American Dream. I believe that in America, right matters. I want to help ensure that right matters for all Americans.”

Troop 1190 Scouters believe that we can encourage the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of young people.

As a community of adults we help the next generation to assume a constructive place in society as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Our methods include mentoring, lifelong learning, faith traditions, serving others, healthy living and building character.

Let us know if you can help.

For more than 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, lea...

1. Cut the coffee filter into a wedge shape.

2. Unfold your neckerchief, then fold in the two points to form a square.

3. Place the coffee filter in the center of the neckerchief.

4. Fold the neckerchief into thirds, by folding the top down and the bottom up.

5. Slide the neckerchief through the rubber bands (or hair ties), so they’re about six inches apart.

6. Fold each side to the middle, and tuck one into the other.

7. Place the mask on your face, with a rubber band over each ear. You may need to adjust the mask so it fits the sides of your face snugly but comfortably.
