Music from the classroom to the stage
These high school students are from Thurgood Marshall High School in Missouri City, TX. From left to right: Marquell Taylor (Alto sax), Kendon Fields (Bass Clarinet), Cameron Hodrick (Trumpet), Kiara Moore (Tenor sax), and KβNiya Brewley (flute)
This is the second group of high school students Iβve worked with in my quest to inspire and educate young musicians about Jazz music and its history. They performed with me, my band, and my friend, special guest artist saxophonist Dean James for a Holiday Jazz Concert inside their school auditorium on December 9, 2018.
Jazz music is an American genre that contains the roots of our country. Blues, Gospel, R&B, Hip-hop, Rap, and even some Classical music reflections are contained in the various forms of Jazz music. The history of Jazz music is far too important in my opinion to be neglected and forgotten about because of the newer phases of music evolution. Young people are our leaders of tomorrow. Without knowing the history of Jazz greats who helped shape our country (as a large number of young people are lacking), they could easily stumble through areas of life that we older folks already experienced, learned from, and adjusted to.
