Tarek's Last Ride

I am posting this because I think not that many people watch the club's forums. Forgive me if you already knew this but many have not.

Last weekend, Sunday, Sep 4th, on a group ride in Arkansas with the West Powersports group, Tarek was leading a ride group when he hit a deer. It was catastrophic for him and he suffered a serious head injury. He was in a hospital in Little Rock where his family gathered while he was in a coma.

From what I understand, Tarek never regained consciousness. On Friday, Sep 9th at 10:55 am, his family decided to discontinue life support for him.

Apparently the airlines could not arrange to fly him back to Houston so he should now arrive on Tuesday (my latest information).

According to Muslim tradition, the person is buried as soon as practicable. That means, if he arrives in Houston on Tuesday, his funeral service and burial will happen that same day. What that means for anyone who wishes to attend is the details may be of quite short notice.

There is an article in the forums about the Muslim funeral meaning and traditions to give some information about what to expect. Please go there to read it as FB doesn't allow links.

For anyone new to the club you should know that Tarek was a member of our club for many years (8-9?) and has been the official club "Ridemeister" for the last 5-6 years. He was an avid rider and was very active in club rides jointly shared with the West Powersports Enthusiasts group (on Meetup.com).

He was a softspoken person, gentle and caring for other people, and a very experienced and capable rider and group leader. Over the years he taught several classes on GPS applications and ride planning.

I will post any updates I receive including details about his funeral on the club forums. Please go there to follow and post any thoughts about Tarek you might share. Google "BMW Motorcycle Club of Houston Forum".

Finally, I am writing this for Fernando, the president of the club, who flew to Ecuador on Saturday, and is unable to engage here or attend Tarek's services this week. I know he sends his thoughts and prayers to his family and all our club members.

This week's cover photo is from Jan D and his recent trip down the Baja Peninsula to Cabo San Lucas with a group hosted by MotoQuest.

This event happened on the return trip. The woman rider was in a group of 8 other motorcycles about 30-35 mph when she heard a loud clattering noise and felt her rear tire instantly go flat. She rode for several hundred yards before could safely slow and pull to the side on the narrow Mexican dirt road. You can see the bolt not only went completely through the knobby tire but also took a chunk out of the cast rim. (This was on a Vstrom 650.)

Her bike was recovered onto the MotoQuest sag wagon and was repaired with a spare wheel so she could resume her travels. One of the advantages of traveling with a sponsored group!

Just a reminder that stuff can happen when you least expect it and you gotta be ready for anything!

Here is the full-size picture of the rear wheel.
