Every year the Ladybugs Garden Club present a $1,500 scholarship to a worthy senior residing in Memorial Northwest. This can be a senior from Klein High School, Klein Oak (International Baccalaureate program), a private Christian school, or homeschooled senior, going to college, vocational school, or trade school. The Ladybugs are always excited for our scholarship winners.
This year’s winner is Grace (Gray) Jones from Klein High School who is going to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas to study Studio Art within the Fine Arts and Communication department. She has lived in Memorial Northwest for 8-1/2 years. Gray has already developed quite the art portfolio. Through her art, it becomes obvious that she is a deep and bright thinker. To appreciate her art, one must look deeply into the details. She comes highly recommended by the KHS School Counselor and the Art Department Chair.
Gray is noted for her community work, which is important to her and which she ardently desires to continue throughout her life. These include festivals, local shelters, her church Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, fundraisers, children’s events such as children’s art festivals, local art vendor festivals, children’s art nights at the library, murals for local businesses and many more. At Klein, Gray was a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Historian of Kats Create (a craft club), Saint Dunstan’s Youth Group and Acolyte Corps., a State Qualifier at VASE art competition, the Key Club, and her favorite diversion in Horseback Riding lessons and shows. All of that sounds like so much fun.
Ms. Gray Jones, congratulations on your win!! All of the Ladybugs wish you an abundance of success, lots of creativity, fun, and broadening of your mind going forward.

May Yard of the Month, Area 1
Andrew and Lexie Harey
17303 Nevelson Circle

Andrew and his wife, Lexie, have lived in Memorial NW since 1989. Their beautiful house sits on a corner lot groomed with beds of striking, vibrant red canna lilies, which immediately draw one’s attention to the yard. Around the perimeter of their house are many knockouts rose bushes among other greenery. Also, in another bed are two olive trees that have the most wonderful fragrance. The Harey’s backyard is equally beautiful and has an array of trees, including a fig tree of which they enjoy its sweet fruit. Tucked in the corner is a hot house where Andrew grows all of his herbs that he uses to make his fresh-flavored Italian sauces. Being born in Italy, he is an expert. I can smell the aroma now. Can you?
Congratulations on winning Yard of the Month.

Memorial Northwest Ladybugs Garden Club
May Yard of the Month, Area 2
Eugene (“Gene”) and Evelyn Chovanec
17611 Abby Lane

Eugene ("Gene") and Evelyn Chovanec built their lovely home in the Memorial Northwest Neighborhood in 1988 and have since raised a family and retired.

Evelyn comments that the Lipstick Pentas are one of her favorites. Gene, a retired Engineer, has just recently added a few more of these favorites to the large bed near the street. "They add the perfect pop of a soft pinkish red color but are not too flashy to overpower" she comments. They are the perfect complement to the neighboring array of green hues found in the tropical Aucuba, Woodferns, and the Firecracker Bush. Their front door is adorned by beautiful beds containing Azaleas (which unfortunately, were not currently in bloom) and gorgeous pink Hydrangeas. Their front yard provides the perfect environment for these beauties to flourish. The Sunshine Ligustrums provide a nice pop of bright green color in this beautifully landscaped yard.
Both Evelyn and Gene enjoy caring for their yard as both have had a love of plants since a young age. Evelyn, a retired Librarian, recalls visiting Gene in his garage apartment (while they were just dating) and seeing a fabulous ivy winding gracefully up the staircase. This wonderful couple has managed to keep that ivy, their love of plants, and their love for each other alive for over 54 years.

MNW May Yard of the Month, Area 3
Jesse and Ana Puente
17819 Forest Park

Jesse and Ana Puente have lived in Memorial Northwest just one year. Jesse is a general contractor who offers various trades in both commercial and residential home improvement and renovations. The Puentes recently had their yard landscaped by Phoenix Rise. Chinese junipers form the backdrop of the beds which are neatly bordered with stone. The use of Indian Hawthorn, variegated pittosporum, Burford holly, camellias, creeping juniper, sunshine ligustrum, and other shrubs, as well as a large boulder, add interest and color to the landscaping. Petunias and dianthus add seasonal color as well.
The Puentes love the spacey layout and the personal expression and social connections that their yard offers. The new landscaping makes their home welcoming, bright and distinctive. It often invites conversation with neighbors and people passing by. Jesse and Ana are proud that they have contributed to the beauty of the community!
Welcome to Memorial Northwest, Jesse and Ana.

Ladybugs Yard of the Month, Area 1
Bettina Cardus
8006 Hertfordshire Circle

Bettina described plants as her hobby, enough so that she purchased the home in 2009 for its yard. Bettina works in the medical field as a medical doctor.

Bettina loves gardening as well as being outdoors. She and her husband created a pond which houses her turtle, Slippy, who is now 25 years old. Slippy, too, loves the outdoors. Bettina manages the flowers while her husband cares for the pool and the turtle pond.

Sounds like an interesting combination.

Congratulations on receiving Yard of the Month.

April 2026
Ladybugs Yard of the Month, Area 2
Jeff and Allison Pilz and Peggy Kobes
17614 December Pine

The winners for April’s Yard of the Month Area 2 are Allison and Jeff Pilz and Allison’s aunt, Peggy Kobes. Their home at 17614 December Pine was recently remodeled and when it became available to buy last year, it fit perfectly into their plan for moving from Chicago to the Houston area to be of assistance to Allison’s aunt, who resides with them. Allison has worked in the Communications industry and Jeff is a retired Fire Chief. Their beautiful home is on a corner lot and one of the few single-story houses in the neighborhood.

After being in their home for a few months, they felt that they wanted a refreshed exterior to go along with the remodeled interior of their house. They conferred with various gardening landscapers, then hiring a team to remove overgrown shrubs and bushes, replacing them with Gardenias, Drift Roses, Dianthus and other colorful bedding plants. Two tall potted containers holding Boston Fern and some new Hibiscus plants were recently added to their porch, welcoming everyone at the front door.

Jeff, Allison and Peggy, your yard is beautiful. We welcome you to Klein and Memorial Northwest.

April 2026
Yard of the Month, Area 3.

Annie Weber
8003 Dutch Oak

To her neighbors that know her, Annie is considered quite the dynamo. She has lived in Memorial Northwest for 29 years and has three children. She is and has been a regular on the MNW tennis team, playing three times a week. She considers herself an extreme gardener, is now retired, and does all of her lawn/yard care herself.

She has many unusual plants in her yard. The yard consists of a loofah trellis, purple verbena, amaryllises, knockout roses, white azaleas, lilies, foxtail ferns, and Mexican petunias. She has a Moringa tree, papayas and Irises. The backyard consists of many fruit trees such as: peach, loquat, fig, pear, and lime. Butterfly bushes surround the backyard pool.

This is a yard I definitely want to see and hopefully get some ideas for my own yard. Congratulations, Annie.

I believe it is noteworthy to mention that Annie declined her award of a gift certificate to Plants For All Seasons, preferring instead that it be used for the benefit of someone else.

In late winter and early spring Hellbores bring forth a burst of jeweled colors to my Addison gardens. These show-stopping bloomers make their debut before their evergreen leaves emerge. I have seven varieties of Hellebores in my gardens!

We hope to see lots of our neighbors at our event!
