21 years ago today, Palestinian civil society launched the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, (BDS), a global call for people of conscience and organizations worldwide to enact boycotts, divestment, and sanctions to pressure the Israeli government to comply with international law.

This call was made in response to the Israeli government’s ongoing violations of international law and the failure of decades of international intervention to end its occupation and apartheid policies against Palestinians.

Drawing inspiration from the anti-apartheid boycott movement in South Africa, which played a pivotal role in the eventual dismantling of apartheid, BDS is rooted in the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency, and a steadfast commitment to resisting injustice and oppression.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement is a call from Palestinian civil society to those outside of Palestine to fight Israel’s apartheid regime with strategic economic and cultural boycotts, divestment (cutting financial ties and ending collaboration), and sanctions (penalties) to pressure the Israeli government to end their ongoing crimes of apartheid and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.

Then and now, the BDS movement demands that the Israeli government comply with international law and uphold universal human rights. For 21 years, this call has mobilized global solidarity and made a significant impact in the struggle for Palestinian liberation.
Today we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to BDS—until the siege and genocide end, the occupation is dismantled, and Palestine is free, from the river to the sea.
JVP Action, our 501c4 organization, is now doing business as JVP; JVP Lab, our 501c3 organization, continues separately and remains focused on our nonpartisan educational and cultural work.

In response to the sumud (steadfastness) of Palestinians in the face of genocide and the increased threat of Christian Zionism and religious nationalism in the US and across the world, we will once again come together this summer in steadfast love for the Interfaith Action for Palestine, July 5-7.

With partners representing a broad faith coalition, we at UUJME will take action in solidarity with Palestinians, and recommit to faith rooted in liberation and care: a world in which Palestine and all people are free.

UUJME has a goal of bringing a minimum of 20 UUs to the IAP. The registration deadline is today (Frdiay 6/26), although that is probably not a "hard" deadline. You can register here: https://www.interfaithforpalestine.com

Mimi Budnick is the UUJME point person for this effort and would be happy to answer any questions you have. You can contact her at [email protected].

We know a different world is possible: a world rooted in care, not warfare; in community, not domination. From Gaza to Sudan, from Minneapolis to Memphis to Montgomery, we are grounded in the belief that our liberation is intertwined. When we come together as an interfaith coalition, we model and demand the world of mutual flourishing we believe in. Come be a part of it with us.
