I am writing to you not only as a lifelong resident of this city, but as someone who deeply loves La Porte. Its people, its spirit, and its promise are among the many things that have kept me here. I was raised here, and now I have the privilege of raising my own children here. Our small town of just over 38,000 is built on the strength of hardworking, blue-collar men and women. A diverse and beautiful community that lives life the way God intended: by loving one another and always answering the call to take care of our own.
But something is happening in our city that we can no longer ignore. It’s heartbreaking, and it demands our attention now. Every day after school, a growing number of our children, from 5 to 18 years of age, find themselves with nowhere to go, nothing to eat, and, perhaps most importantly, no guidance, direction, or love during the most critical years of their development. Many of these young people gather at the only public place available to them, our library. They seek warmth, safety, and a sense of belonging there until closing time.
Our library is a wonderful resource for learning and community, but it was never meant to carry this responsibility alone. It cannot, and should not, be expected to serve as a shelter, youth center, or family for OUR children. Yet that is exactly what it has become out of necessity.
As leaders of this community and as followers of Christ, we are called to do better. We are called to look after the most vulnerable among us, especially our children. Right now, we are failing them. But together, we can change that.
That’s where the vision of “Loving La Porte” begins.
It’s more than just a plan for a building. It’s a movement of compassion and community. It’s a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space where our youth can gather after school to study, play, learn, and most importantly, feel seen, supported, and loved. A place where they can find mentorship, meals, and meaningful guidance, all rooted in the belief that La Porte takes care of its own.
This is our moment to act boldly, faithfully, and united.
If each of us does our part, whether through resources, partnerships, ideas, or simple acts of service, we can change the narrative for countless young lives right here in our city.
There is an urgent need in La Porte today, and it can no longer be ignored. Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus. Let’s be the change that ensures no child in La Porte feels forgotten or unloved.
If this mission speaks to your heart, I invite you to join us. To contribute, collaborate, or simply reach out to learn more about how we can make Loving La Porte a reality together.
Currently the board of Loving La Porte has been buying the food and drinks that are being served most weekdays. Any given day we could feed upwards of 100+ kids. While now we are blessed to be in a position to do that, it is not sustainable. If you feel that you or your organization can help with offsetting the cost of food or volunteering a few hours a week/month, please contact us for more information.
With faith, hope, and gratitude,
Michael
