The Texas Open Beaches Act (OBA) is the law that guarantees YOUR right to access and use the Texas coast.....even if you don't own beachfront property. Unfortunately, every time the Texas Legislature meets someone shows up with proposed bills to take your access rights away. The 5 Surfrider Foundation chapters in Texas are there to defeat them every time. Since 1999, Texas Surfrider Foundation mem

bers have participated in local and state government policy and law-making to preserve YOUR coast, waves and beach access. We have killed dozen's of bad bills that would restrict YOUR rights. In fact, in 2009, we led the charge in the legislature to pass "Prop 9", a constitutional amendment that "elevated" the OBA from, just a law, to a Constitutional Right. That's right, a bunch of Texas surfers "shepherded" Prop 9 through the legislature. It passed in the Texas House with only 1 "no" vote, and the Texas Senate with only 2 "no" votes. In the General Election a few months later it easily passed with 805,362 "for" votes to 241,522 "against" votes. The people of Texas have spoken but the people who want to create beachfront gated communities and private beaches continue to show up locally and in Austin every year. If you want your children to be able to enjoy YOUR Texas beach like you do....well....how about helping us out?

Remembering our founder, Ila Loetscher, on her birthday today.

She began caring for sea turtles in 1965 in Rancho Nuevo, Mexico, where she spent two weeks volunteering. Working with the Kemp’s ridley, she fell in love with sea turtles and began caring for them in her own home on South Padre Island.

By 1977, Ila formed Sea Turtle, Inc. after years of sharing her love with visitors and the local community.

Volunteers began taking a more prominent role in our organization in 1995 when Ila’s health started to fail. Sadly, she passed away in 2000, but her legacy lives on in the lives of volunteers, supporters, and staff at Sea Turtle Inc. today.

We need your help once again. HB 3859 is set to be debated in committee this Wednesday, 4/12/2023. This bill will effectively allow municipalities to circumvent the requirements of the Natural Resource Code that requires coastal municipalities to timely file their beach access and use plans with General Land Office. It creates a loophole that will allow cities to ignore the OBA.

End of an Era: Dear SURFHOUSE customers and friends.
After being in operation for 56 years, Surfhouse is announcing the closure of the business at the end of May 2023. This decision was very difficult to make, but with all the options on the table, Carol Sandel has decided to retire.
Carol will continue to be open during this period to sell items to her devoted customers that have called Surfhouse "The Oldest Surf Shop in Texas", serving several generations of surfers and skateboarders throughout the metro Houston and overall Texas area. This loyal following of people are considered family by Carol. She would like to thank everyone that has supported Surfhouse and Lloyd and her during all these years and to say it was an honor to provide this service to the community.
Of particular note, she would like to further thank her landlord, Fifth Corner for their gracious help and understanding in her transition to retirement.
Please come by and wish her all the best and say goodbye.
Further announcements will follow over the next few weeks on the Surfhouse Facebook site.
