As communities across the nation begin commemorating America's Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence—the South Belt-Ellington community celebrated with its Freedom 250 Fourth of July Parade.

The event started with Crossroads singing the National Anthem. Residents lined the parade route, waving flags and creating an enthusiastic atmosphere for this annual tradition. The parade began at Sagemont Church on Hughes Road, continued to Blackhawk Boulevard, turned onto Scarsdale, and finished at San Jacinto College South Campus.

About 50 entries highlighted the community’s diversity, featuring decorated vehicles and floats, local organizations, businesses, first responders, and a military Humvee.

Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and longtime resident Emory Gadd served as Grand Marshals and led the parade.

Families cheered, picked up candy, and enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

Three judges had a tough time making their final decisions, but four entries received special recognition.

The award winners were:
* Most Patriotic: Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia
* Best South Belt Spirit: J. Frank Dobie High School FFA
* Most Original: Duckorama
* Judges' Choice: Armenta's Early Childhood Development

The awards were sponsored by Raquel Forero, Forero Realty Group.

The South Belt–Ellington Chamber of Commerce drew a full wall and dealt an unforgettable first-hand experience at its inaugural A Night of Mahjong, presented by Houston Methodist, held June 18, 2026, at The Foundation For Hope Village

Guests checked in and quickly found themselves *in the game,* enjoying dinner, networking, shopping, and a lively atmosphere before play began.

This inaugural event would not have been possible without the Chamber’s presenting sponsor, Houston Methodist, whose partnership transformed the evening from a simple draw to a true Mahjong masterpiece.

As the tiles were about to be dealt, guests were welcomed and guided through the evening’s flow—ensuring everyone, from beginners to seasoned players, was ready to call Mahjong! when their moment arrived.

Dr. Modupe Adeyefa from Houston Methodist delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the significance of breast health for women of all ages, which added depth and purpose to the occasion.

With the rules clarified and the tables beautifully set, it was time to draw, discard, and strategize. The room came alive as players worked their tiles—forming sets, making quick decisions, and sharing plenty of laughter along the way.

As the final rounds approached, players carefully tracked scores, eyeing that final tile that could turn a good game into a great one. When the last tiles were played and scorecards submitted, the evening shifted into celebration mode.

The awards presentation honored those who played their hands to perfection, recognizing top individual scorers across beginner, intermediate, and expert levels, as well as standout tables that demonstrated teamwork and strategy. But Mahjong isn’t just about the win—it’s also about the experience—and the Best Decorated Table awards proved that creativity at the table is just as important as skill in the game.

One especially lucky guest drew the ultimate prize, winning a stunning Mahjong set and mat—truly a jackpot tile moment that added excitement to an already memorable evening

The wall has been built. The tiles have been dealt. And this inaugural night?
Mahjong—well played.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” ~ John Lubbock
