🌟 INSPIRING LEADERS. SHARED PURPOSE. ONE MISSION. ❤️🤝
One of the most rewarding parts of attending the LULAC Texas State Convention was the opportunity to meet and learn from leaders whose dedication, service, and commitment continue to make a difference in communities across our nation. 🇺🇸✨
It was an honor to connect with National LULAC President Roman Palomares, Ty Garcia of Kekoa Council 60 Houston, Dr. Maggie Rivera of LULAC-IL #5296 and National Treasurer, Lupita Chapa of LULAC Council 612 San Antonio, Gabriel Y. Rosales, Texas State Director and Council #4483 San Antonio, and Elisa Tamez Rosales, LULAC District XV Director.
These leaders embody the values that make LULAC such a powerful force for good — leadership, service, advocacy, education, and empowerment. Their passion for uplifting communities and creating opportunities for future generations is truly inspiring. ❤️
As members of LULAC Council 255 Texas City, we are grateful for the opportunity to build relationships, share ideas, learn from one another, and continue working together toward a brighter future for all.

Leaders who LOVE to have fun, laugh loud, volunteer hard, and somehow turn every “quick meeting” into a full production 😭🎤

There’s always:
🤣 Someone cracking jokes
🎉 Someone planning another event
📱 Someone distracted on their phone
AND…

But honestly… that’s what makes Council 255 special ❤️

🇺🇸✨ HOW LULAC HELPED INSPIRE THE HEAD START PROGRAM ✨🇺🇸

In the 1950s, many Hispanic children entered public schools in Texas already at a disadvantage — not because they lacked intelligence or potential, but because they did not yet speak English. 💔📚

During a time of segregation and discrimination, countless children were mislabeled, left behind, and made to feel they did not belong in the classroom.

But League of United Latin American Citizens believed our children deserved more. ❤️

Mexican American educator and civil rights advocate George I. Sánchez had spent years studying the educational barriers Hispanic children faced. He believed children needed foundational English vocabulary before entering school so they could succeed academically and confidently transition into the English-speaking classroom environment. ✏️🏫

Inspired by these ideas, then-LULAC National President Felix Tijerina, along with Tony Campos, David Adame, and Jacob Rodriguez, helped turn that vision into action. Together, they developed and launched the Little School of the 400 — a groundbreaking program that taught Spanish-speaking preschool children 400 essential English words before entering first grade. 🌟

And it worked.

Children who once felt lost in school now walked into classrooms with confidence, understanding, and hope for a brighter future. 💫

What began as a community-driven movement through LULAC became nationally recognized and later helped inspire the federal Head Start Program during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. 🇺🇸📖

Think about that…

A Hispanic civil rights organization helped lay the foundation for one of the most important early childhood education programs in American history. ❤️🤍💙

This is more than history.This is leadership.This is legacy.This is the power of a community refusing to let its children be forgotten. 💪🏽✨

And nearly 100 years later, LULAC continues fighting for education, opportunity, leadership, and empowerment for future generations.

🌟 SOME PEOPLE LEAD WITH WORDS… OTHERS LEAD THROUGH SERVICE, SACRIFICE & FAITH ❤️
LULAC Council 255 Texas City is proud to recognize our incredible Chaplain, Gabriel Vela — a man whose life reflects faith, leadership, humility, dedication, and service to others. 🙏✨
Gabriel is the Owner of Vela Properties LLC & Brightway Insurance, The Vela Agency and has been actively involved in real estate investing since 2008. Alongside his business success, he has built a respected 30-year career in his industry, including 15 years with BP and the past 5 years with INEOS, where he currently serves as a Lead Maintenance professional. His strong work ethic, leadership, and dedication continue to make a lasting impact both professionally and within the community. 🏡🔥
Beyond business and career success, Gabriel’s servant heart shines through his commitment to faith and community. He is deeply involved in his church, proudly serves with United We Stand in Jesus Christ, and faithfully serves as an usher. For years, he has volunteered cooking Thanksgiving turkeys for families in need — always willing to give back and serve others with compassion and love. 🦃❤️
Gabriel is also a proud United Steel Worker, devoted husband of 29 years, loving father of five, and proud grandfather of three. He enjoys serving his community, spending quality time with family, and vacationing with loved ones. 🌴☀️
Gabriel represents what true leadership looks like — leading through action, sacrifice, consistency, faith, and service to others. His impact reaches far beyond titles, and we are honored to have him as part of LULAC Council 255 Texas City. ❤️🙌
