Join us as we celebrate National FFA Week. “Future Farmers of America” was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting – it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art.”

FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more. For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 after a vote of national convention delegates to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the industry of agriculture.

The official name of the organization is the National FFA Organization. The letters “FFA” stand for Future Farmers of America. These letters are a part of our history and our heritage that will never change.

Why we created the Fort Bend Buyers Group

Each year there are hundreds of students who participate in the Fort Bend County Fair by exhibiting FFA or 4-H livestock projects. These students are learning valuable life skills and responsibility through their projects. The Fort Bend Buyers Group was created to increase the community support for all Fort Bend County students at the Fair. Increasing numbers of FFA Chapters are organized in high schools in urban areas, and unfortunately the surrounding communities are not aware of the value of these programs.

By supporting these students at the Livestock Auctions and helping with non-sale animals, we are investing in our County’s future. These students use the money they receive at the auctions for basically three things: education, starting a new project or supporting an existing project. In some cases the FFA and 4-H programs provide the leadership opportunities for students that are not in band or sports.

Half a million students across the country are becoming leaders, building self-esteem and preparing for career success. They are members of FFA and are making new friends, going new places and trying new things. FFA prepares students by helping them develop leadership and life skills that will shape their decision-making and values for the rest of their lives.

Kids build life skills by leading hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture and, civic engagement – helping them to grow confidence, independence, resilience, and compassion. Adult mentors provide a positive environment where they learn by doing. This 4‑H experience is delivered by a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation.
