CAUBLE HOUSE

Earlier this year I learned that nearly all of the furnishings in the Cauble House had been removed. I have met with the Tyler County Heritage Society and said that if the locks on the house were changed and that they control the key, then the Cauble Family would refurnish the house.

I have set up a committee to oversee the refurnishing effort. Members are: Becky Christmas, Revis Leonard, Sylvia Rankin, Shelly Baize and Reagan Sims.

Anyone wanting to donate items to the house will need to insure it complies with the following guidelines.

1. The items must be appropriate to the mid 1800's. No veneers,
plastic, etc.
2. Must be donated, not loaned.
3. Must be approved by a majority of the Committee members.
4. Each item will include a picture of the item and doner if possible and included in a book that will be placed in the front room of the Cauble House. A card on the item explaining the item and donor's name is acceptable, but no metal plaques attached to the items.
5. No item will be added or removed without our approval.

Anyone wanting to donate items should send a picture and description of the item to the Committee.

We want the house to accurately represent what it would look like in the 1800's and be something that we and the people of Tyler County can be proud of.

Several members have mentioned they have items to donate, and I look forward to hearing from you.

James

To members of the Texas Cauble Family Association:
James Cauble mentioned to me that folks want to be able to post on this page. To post, one must be an admin. Having zillions of admins is dangerous to a page -- however, I think the folks who suggested this were likely thinking of how a Facebook GROUP works. Anyone who is admitted to the group can post and comment. It's a good idea for us to have a group to share research, historical tidbits, calls to action regarding the Peter Cauble home and more. I am going to set one up for us today. Stay tuned for info on how to join.
Your kin, Sylvia Caldwell Rankin.

Famous Texas kolache shop (and inventor of klobasnek?) is reopening
Story by Timothy Malcolm

What's the first Texas food that you think of? Is it barbecue brisket? Beef fajitas? Chicken fried steak? A banh mi? All are good responses, but there may be no match for the humble kolache and klobasnek.
The treats of filling inside soft dough are an essential part of the Texas experience and was introduced to much of the Lone Star State at a small outpost in a a tiny Central Texas city. According to reports, that small outpost, which had been closed for five years, is coming back and will serve those kolaches and klobasniky once more.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported this week that Village Bakery in the city of West, about 20 miles north of Waco and with a population of just over 2,500, will soon reopen.
Village Bakery opened in 1951, when Wendel Montgomery made kolaches—the sweet ones filled with fruit—and klobasniky—the savory ones filled typically with meat and/or cheese—similar to those baked for decades in Czech communities. Village Bakery is considered the first to produce the tasty snacks to the public, though others have followed. It has even been claimed that Village Bakery invented the savory klobasnek.
After Montgomery died in 2003, his daughter Mimi Montgomery Irwin moved back from New York to take over the business. She died in 2019, leaving Village Bakery's future in question. The location had been closed ever since.
But according to the Star-Telegram, Shelly and Darrell Miller, who own the neighboring Village Shoppe, have purchased the building and will reopen with the old recipes.
West is something of a kolache capital, home to several well-known and highly regarded spots. It's also, with its larger Czech population, a place where the tradition of kolache is maybe a little more serious than in big Texas cities. In 2016, Irwin told NPR that it's something of a mission for her to educate the public on what's a kolache and what's a klobasnek.
"I try to help them understand that when they ask for a kolache, they should not be getting meat," Irwin told NPR. "And in many of the chains, that's what's being passed off as a kolache."
A date for the reopening of Village Bakery has not yet been revealed.
