Dove hunting season begins Sept. 1, but drought conditions seen across Texas this summer are changing how hunters will have to approach this year's season opener. "Unless conditions change drastically over the next few weeks, hunting near water will be key for opening day this year," said Owen Fitzsimmons, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Dove Program Leader. "Hunters will likely see larger concentrations of birds at watering holes and food sources than they have in the past due to limited resources." Agriculture production has been hit hard by drought, so birds may rely more on native foods this September, according to Fitzsimmons. He recommended dove hunters look for stands of common sunflower, croton and other native annual forbs and grasses this year.

Texas will receive more than $26 million for rural broadband expansion.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced last week an additional $401 million for high-speed internet access in rural communities across the country. Of that, two Texas companies will receive $26.41 million in grants.

“Connectivity is critical to economic success in rural America,” USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. “The internet is vital to our growth and continues to act as a catalyst for our prosperity. From the farm to the school, from households to international markets, connectivity drives positive change in our communities.”

AUSTIN — Texas will receive more than $26 million for rural broadband expansion.
