ART HISTORY

Looking imaginatively and carefully at art takes practice but comes with its own rewards. Closer Looks will introduce you to works of all kinds, from the dawn of civilization to the here and now, sung and unsung, each with its own story. To keep things real, your walking shoes will take you behind the scenes as well as through the galleries of The Menil Collection, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Kimbell Art Museum, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, The San Antonio Museum of Art, The Blanton Museum of Art and The Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas. Their walls speak – actually rock – but don’t take our word for it.

"The program helped me discover my love for Art History and familiarize myself with the Rice University campus. I have this program to thank for expanding my horizons regarding my interests. I currently attend Rice University, double majoring in Psychology and Art History."

ARCHITECTURE

Architecture combines practical considerations of function and sustainability with a poetics of form and meaning. Although architecture may take years to master, those who study it in college have usually harbored an intense curiosity since at least their early teens. Daily slide-illustrated lectures on architectural history from the ancient to modern and an introductory studio, with accompanying field trips, will give you a broader, deeper understanding of the subject and also the opportunity to develop a portfolio for use in applying to schools of architecture should you eventually wish to do so.

"My scholarship for Wonderworks was a huge catalyst in my life, and my experience at Wonderworks gave me confidence that pursuing architecture was definitely for me. Sarah, a fellow architecture student, and I met at Wonderworks. We randomly sat next to each other at Wonderworks, and then the first year of architecture at UH we found ourselves sitting next to each other again. We hope to have our own firm together one day. Our experience in the program had such a huge impact on the both of us."

Amber (Santa Fe High School)

Today Amber is working with us for the third year this summer as our Architecture Program Coordinator before starting her first post grad job as an Architectural Designer in Houston this fall!

FICTION/CREATIVE WRITING

Storytelling is inextricably linked to our DNA, and happily so. For millennia, we’ve entertained ourselves with all kinds of tales that, however conveyed and consumed, retold and remixed, drawn from life or fantastically imagined, manage to work their magic in every corner of the globe. This summer you’ll dive, head, eyes and heart first, into some of the most captivating stories ever to appear in print or on film.

"I am currently a freshman at George Washington University, majoring in Creative Writing. I actually wrote parts of my supplemental essays about how the Wonderworks program inspired me to apply as a Creative Writing major. My high school did not expose me to much outside of analytical writing so this course was a big step for me, one I am very grateful for. I really believe the creative thinking skills I picked up from this course helped me to not only gain admission to several of my top choice colleges, but also to receive several merit scholarships. It might seem odd that one summer program could change someone's life but the truth is that the Story Lines course opened my eyes to how much I love to write."

LAW & POLITICS

How societies manage themselves, and to what ends, are questions that challenge human understanding, ingenuity, and even patience. Rules of the Game will focus on the political, legal, and governmental complexities of democracy in the United States and elsewhere, grounded in the here-and-now but reaching back through history for perspective. Through lectures, readings, case-studies, films, and field trips, you'll gain a deeper, more nuanced appreciation of the values and competing interests that shape modern life and civic culture.

"For the longest time, politics just seemed like one big headache, and honestly it still is. However, this class has gotten me to realize that even though the power struggle is intense, it’s just one big game. Which means with practice, I can learn to maneuver it, and maybe even win a few rounds.

Rice University has been my dream school for years, so having the opportunity to go on campus for five weeks and meeting Rice students, professors, and alumni has been amazing."

FILMMAKING

Moving Pictures can’t promise you a Hollywood ending, but it can help get you ready for your close-ups, tracking shots, story conferences, sound mixes, and final wraps. You’ll acquire an understanding of lighting, cinematography, production design, continuity, dramatic structure, location scouting, editing and a host of other concepts and skills essential to filmmaking.

"This program has been eye-opening for me because it exposed me to a new side of media and art that I had not been exposed to too much before. It helped to show me the vast variety of ways to portray the same idea, and how to embody a film with power and a meaningful message that can last the test of time."
