A little update on Denzel after today’s meet-and-greet.
Denzel is still available for adoption, and we ARE open to additional meet-and-greets with appropriate applicants.
Today, however, Denzel showed us a side of his personality that we have not seen before.
At previous events, Denzel has allowed potential adopters and visitors to approach, interact with, and handle him with ease. We have not previously seen this level of defensive behavior from him.
During today’s meet-and-greet, Denzel became very uncomfortable with the potential adopter and displayed growling and biting behavior that appeared to be intended to make the person back away and give him space.
Because of what we observed today, we believe Denzel’s best placement will probably be in a quieter, lower-traffic home where there are not constant new people or guests coming inside.
Normal outside activity and deliveries are not the concern. Our concern is frequent visitors entering the home and spending time in Denzel’s personal space.
Since Denzel is still only 10 months old and very much a puppy, we also believe he would probably be best suited for an adult household, or a home with older, respectful children who understand dog body language and know when to give him space.
A home with very young children who may not yet understand a dog’s warning signals, boundaries, or need for personal space would not be the best fit for him at this time.
We also want potential adopters to understand that this type of defensive behavior could possibly carry over into his future home. If Denzel becomes uncomfortable with someone entering his space, similar behavior could be directed toward visitors or guests.
This does NOT mean Denzel is no longer adoptable, and it does not mean we are stopping meet-and-greets.
Today simply gave us new information that we believe is important to share honestly so we can find the home that is truly the best fit for him.
Denzel needs an adopter who is patient, understands dog body language, respects his boundaries, and is willing to continue helping this young boy mature into a confident adult dog.
As always, our goal is not just to get a dog adopted. It is to make the RIGHT placement for both the dog and the family.
