Pop-Up Kitchen

HOUSTON (April 6, 2020) – Pop-Up Kitchen, a collaborative project between Houston City Councilmember Letitia Plummer, Mario Azodinia, CEO of Capstone Houston Group, LLC, Wendell Price, Menu Creator and Ambassador of Seaside Lounge and other local restaurants, and Laurie Robinson, founder and CEO of Disaster & Humanitarian Services, Inc., will launch this Wednesday, April 8. The donation-based initiative will take place this Wednesday, April 8 through Easter Sunday, April 12 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and next Tuesday, April 14 through Sunday, April 19 during the same time slots. Additional days may be added pending funding and need.

This initiative was developed to address an immediate need: to feed Houstonians, especially seniors or individuals who rely on multipurpose centers or faith-based organizations or non-profits to provide their daily meals, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 40,000 Houstonians have lost their jobs and Houston chefs and the Pop-Up Kitchen organizing team have stepped up with the goal of feeding 100 Houstonians each day.

Participating chefs develop their own daily menu and volunteer their time to cook out of the Seaside Lounge kitchen, while the ingredients will be purchased through tax-deductible donations from private donors, at an estimated $4 per meal. Houstonians will be able to drive up to Seaside Lounge, located at 702 W. Dallas Street, anytime during the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. operating hours to access the free meals, delivered to them curbside by volunteers. Meals will be given to Houstonians free-of-charge with proof of unemployment (letter from TWC, documentation showcasing that they filed or documentation from previous employer) or identification showcasing that they 65 years of age or older. Social distancing and exceptional hygiene practices will be in place throughout each step of the process.

In addition to Chef Wendell Price who will kick-off the Pop-Up Kitchen at Seaside Lounge, Pop-Up Kitchen will made be possible thanks to the following volunteer chefs to date: Ana Beaven of Cuchara; Chris Williams of Lucille’s; Andres Albarran of New York Deli & Coffee Shop and Houston Catering Concepts; Nick Semoudiaris of Roadster Grill at Eighteen36; Karren Lovelady of Lovelady’s Pop-up; Rhonda Roark Diehl of Camp Lantern Creek; Sparkle McPherson of SMC Catering Company and Rafi Nasr of Craft Pita. Chefs interested in donating their time can sign up via https://www.signupgenius.com/go/popupkitchen. The Pop-Up Kitchen will continue to operate as long as Houstonians continue to showcase the overwhelming generosity they have to date and contribute to the GoFundMe page.
