A mix of factors will determine which kidney transplant candidate receives which organ.

These factors include:

Tissue match between kidney donor and candidate.
Blood type.
Blood antibody levels.
Length of time on the kidney transplant waiting list.
Whether the potential kidney transplant recipient is a child.
Body size of both donor and candidate.
Geographic area.

A living donor kidney functions, on average, 12 to 20 years, and a deceased donor kidney from 8 to 12 years.

A few years ago a mass was found on one of Susan Bash's kidneys. Due to the type of mass the whole kidney had to be removed.

Almost 2 years ago Susan started going into Congestive Heart Failure and continued to retain fluid. They found out her only kidney was not functioning. She started talking to doctors and they decided the best plan was to start dialysis treatments at Davita Dialysis.

We got news not too far into her treatment that she was considered to be in END STAGE 5 RENAL FAILURE. There is nothing past that stage except Death. Her one and only kidney is completely failing.

We started the long process of getting her qualified for a transplant. Lots of tests and doctors appointments!!! Shes finally qualified! Now starts the long wait. The wait that can only be shortened by a living donor!
