Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston We are proud to be one of Forbes' top 100 charities serving underserved communities in the Houston area. Join us to make an impact! The Society of St.

Consider this: almost one in three households throughout Greater Houston cannot cover the rising costs of all their essential, basic needs. These families have homes and jobs, but they live in constant fear, teetering on the edge of financial ruin. Just one unexpected expense or added strain can push them into crisis, making survival a daily battle. Today, an estimated 19.6% of Greater Houston’s p

opulation live in poverty. That means almost one in every five people, and almost three in ten children living in Houston live in poverty. Vincent de Paul Galveston-Houston is a grassroots, volunteer-based, direct-aid organization that helps people in need get back on their feet. We provide short-term financial, material, and emotional support and work person-to-person through advocacy, education and referral efforts to break cycles of poverty, empower people and promote self-sufficiency. The help our volunteers give is intensely personal. When a family is struggling, we visit them in their homes. We learn their names and their stories, assessing their unique needs and offering relief for their immediate crisis. This human connection helps neighbors in need hold onto the hope and determination to keep going. Vincent de Paul strives to promote self-sufficient, dignified living for all. We believe in helping those in need regardless of race, religion or citizenship status. We offer confidential support in a dignified way that seeks to respect and empower those that we serve because we believe these are things all people deserve. Follow us to learn more about the exciting work we are doing every day to make the world a brighter place!

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to read General Order No. 3. It was a blunt declaration: “The people are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” The order established an “absolute equality of personal rights,” marking a tectonic shift in American history, writes Amy Auzenne, director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis.

Today, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Galveston honors Juneteenth—born here in our own community—as a sacred reminder of freedom, dignity, and hope fulfilled.

On June 19, 1865, the long-awaited news of emancipation reached Galveston, marking a turning point in our nation’s story. We recognize this day as a call to deeper solidarity with our neighbors, especially those still seeking justice, opportunity, and peace.

As St. John Paul II reminds us, “Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”

Healing isn’t weakness—it’s courage.
This Men’s Health Awareness season, we stand with those facing PTSD, remembering that even the strongest hearts need care. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). You are not alone, and your story is not over. 💙
