Last Monday NEW Houston, Friends of Fonde Park and the Community Labor Table held a community celebration in the park to celebrate 🎉 Labor Day ! Each table had a civic engagement activity and people came from all over Houston to participate!!!! Labor Day Weekend was a complete success!! The Union BBQ was a perfect blend of community, family, and worker power! 👨‍👩‍👧

Commissioners Court on Tuesday was tense. Judge Lina Hidalgo and Commissioner Tom Ramsey pushed back hard against the proposed property tax increase for Houston homeowners, but the measure still passed in a narrow 3–2 vote.

So, what does this increase actually do, and who benefits from it?

🏥Harris Health expansion
🛟A new safety program championed by Commissioner Rodney Ellis
✂️ Avoids major layoffs and cuts to programs
📢 A state-designated entity to improve mental health services
💰️ A $20 minimum wage for workers at the Harris Center
🏡 Selling underutilized county properties and raising certain fees, such as eviction filing costs

Is closing the &180-million-dollar deficit worth it, or should the extra $198 dollars a year stay in the pockets of Houstonians?

New Economy for Working Houston was honored to attend the Working families Awards by the Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation this past Saturday! We received an award for our diligence in the community fighting for the rights of working Houstonians.

It is so important to fight for policies that actually HELP and KEEP people SAFE while on the job. Everyone deserves to come home safely from a job site, and we are trying to implement this across all trades.

Thank you for this award and let's keep fighting the good fight and get into some good trouble!
