Houston and Killellan Kirk Mens Shed

Houston and Killellan Kirk Mens Shed Shed members meet on a weekly basis to work on projects for themselves and the community.

The Shed offers an opportunity to learn new skills or brush up on old ones and there is always time for a cup of tea and a blether.

The weather wasn't too kind for our annual BBQ but that didn't matter as the Kirk West Halls accommodated over 80 of our Shedders, friends and family for what was a great night with loads of chat, laughter and of course delicious food! An event like this doesn't just happen, there are loads of folk behind the scenes, too many to mention, who organise and set up but a special shout out must go to Johnathan, Eric and Kenn who
BBQ'd perfectly with no reported tummy upsets๐Ÿคฃ. Also a big thank you to Lorna who slaved in the hot kitchen most of the day prepping for the evening. Lastly, our Carol, who basically did everything to make the evening work for us all to enjoy. The Shed has and continues to be a great asset for our users and the community. The BBQ just highlights how important it is.

Apparently, it's been said that as you get older, you forget how to skip... ๐Ÿค”

Well, we decided that sounded like a challenge! ๐Ÿ˜‚ So, on the way to tea break, we held an official Skipping Challenge to prove the myth wrong.

Safe to say there were some impressive performances... and some that definitely won't be making the Olympic team! ๐Ÿคฃ

A huge thank you to Kiera and Emily for their top-notch filming expertise (and for capturing the evidence! ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ˜‚).

Yesterday was a busy one! ๐Ÿ˜Š

The walking stick is one of our latest repair and renovation projects, and we're delighted to say the owner is absolutely thrilled with the finished result. It's always rewarding to see a well-loved item restored and back where it belongs.

It was hot work for Iain yesterday, doing a spot of welding in the summer heat! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ

After all that hard work, we decided to decant to the Houston Inn for a spot of lunch and a wee refreshment. A big thank you to Jacqueline and all the staff for the excellent food, fantastic service, and for making us feel so welcome. It was the perfect way to round off the day! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

What a wonderful week for our Shed community!

Adam and Jack were delighted to attend the Graduation Service at Corseford College this morning. Congratulations to all the graduates, especially Patrick and Calvin, who have been joining us at the Shed every month over the past year.

The boys have thrown themselves into Shed life, helping to set up for our morning teas, building bird boxes, repairing and recycling items, and getting involved in so many of our activities. They have been a tremendous asset to the Shed, and it has been a pleasure to watch their confidence and skills grow. We wish them both every success and happiness on their onward journey.

We also want to congratulate one of our members, Bob Cairns, and his wife, Lorna, who were invited to the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood on Tuesday. Bob represented the Shed with great pride and is someone who works tirelessly in everything he does for our members and the wider Shed community.

Bob, thank you for all you do โ€“ your dedication is truly appreciated. And we have to say, you and Lorna both scrubbed up very well indeed!

Congratulations to Patrick, Calvin, Bob and Lorna on these special occasions. We are incredibly proud to have you all as part of our Shed family. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰

โ˜€๏ธ What a scorcher of a day at the Shed today! โ˜€๏ธ

We're delighted to say that we have now completed the commissioned tapestry/art displays. A huge thank you to everyone on the team for all the hard work, dedication, and creativity that went into bringing them to life.

Special thanks also go to our Clerk of Works, who did a fantastic job of keeping everyone on task... even if it wasn't always easy! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Of course, it's not all work at the Shed. We also made time to sit, chat, enjoy the sunshine, and soak up a few rays ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Also featured in today's photos are some of the impressive modes of transport our members use to get here โ€” including a few two-wheeled beauties! ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Well done everyone, and here's to many more productive (and sunny!) days at the Shed.

We were delighted to attend the Houston Agricultural Show again this year. As always, it was a fantastic showcase for the village, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting, chatting with, and catching up with everyone who stopped by our stall. Thank you to everyone who came over to say hello!

Back at the workshop, we're currently working on a commission for 8 tapestry frames. As you can see, we've got quite the production line set up at the moment, with the big boss keeping a close eye on proceedings! ๐Ÿ˜‚ (Crawford, Allan has borrowed your chair!)

Our band is slowly expanding, and it's lovely to hear them playing so many popular tunes. It's great to see and hear the progress they're making.

We are missing Crawford and Brian this week and would like to wish them both a speedy recovery. Get well soon, gentlemen โ€“ we look forward to having you back with us soon!

As many of you know, we have lots of talented members who come along each week to share their knowledge, skills, and talents with others at The Shed. We also undertake commissions for the community, and these are just two of our recent projects.

The first is a beautiful memorial bench, now placed in the community orchard in memory of a much-loved lady, Sue Campbell.

The second is a bagatelle game that had certainly seen better days. Years of wear, flaking woodwork, and damage had left its owner thinking it could never be restored. However, because it held so many treasured memories, our member Ian was delighted to bring it back to life once again.

The Shed is a lifeline โ€” not only for our members, but also as a way of supporting and giving back to our wider community.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

What a fantastic day at the Houston & Killellan Kirk Carnival Parade on Saturday!

Alongside many other amazing groups and organisations, we had the pleasure of taking part in this yearโ€™s parade, with the theme being the Commonwealth. Our group proudly represented Team Scotland!

A huge thank you to everyone involved for inviting us to participate, and to everyone who stopped by our stall for a chat and to show their support throughout the day.

Another successful project completed by Allan D and his team for Rhonda, and by Kenn for Houston Primary School โ€” well done to everyone involved for all the hard work behind the scenes.

Thank you also to our official team photographer, Andy Stark for capturing these wonderful images.

Once again, thank you all for your continued support. It is always greatly appreciated!

We have lots to share from the Shed this week ๐Ÿ˜Š

Firstly, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Ham family for their generous donation following the passing of their father, Mr Bill Ham, in the summer of 2025. Bill was a valued member of the Shed and a keen photographer. Many of our members will treasure his photograph book featuring beautiful scenes from Houston.

We are also incredibly grateful to John McCulloch for his extremely generous donation of tools to the Shed. These will be put to great use in our new workshop โ€” thank you so much, John!

In other news, one of our members, Bob J, has been hard at work building three raised beds for Morar Care Home. We look forward to sharing more photos once they have been planted up.

If you're passing by on a Wednesday morning, you might hear some music coming from the Shed! A number of our members enjoy a regular jam session, and weโ€™d love to welcome anyone who plays an instrument and would like to join in.

Finally, we currently have a picnic bench available for a suggested donation of ยฃ100. If you are interested, please send us a private message for more details.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
