I've been telling care home operators this for years, and here it is in black and white.

Montgomery County Fire Marshal arrested an operator running two unlicensed care homes on Spring Pines Drive. Both had bedridden residents. Neither was licensed.

The part operators keep getting wrong:

• Texas law defines an assisted living facility as one that furnishes food and shelter "in one or more facilities" to four or more unrelated persons
• Splitting residents across two houses does not get you under the threshold
• Three here and three there is six. You need a license
• Operating without one is a Class A misdemeanor per location

Here is how I help you avoid this.

As a former licensed Nursing Home Administrator, I know what a compliant community looks like from the inside, and I know what the red flags are.

What that means for your family:

• I only place with communities that hold a current state license
• I verify licensure and inspection history before you ever set foot in the building
• I tour with you and tell you what I'd tell my own family
• My service is free to families. Communities pay the fee, not you

If someone is showing you a "care home" in a residential neighborhood and can't produce a license number, walk away and call me instead.
