Proud to be affiliated with the IAFF. Our Union continues to improve the lives of our members and their families.

This time they have been able to impact the lives of not only firefighters, but everyone that has a pension and has been paying into social security and been unable to receive the benefits they have earned.

Only needs the President’s signature and this effort is a success.

Thank you to our IAFF and other Union leaders, along with the members of Congress that voted for this important bill.

WEP/GPO REPEALED!!!

Tonight, with wide bipartisan support, just after midnight in Washington, D.C. and minutes before the close of this 118th session of Congress, the United States Senate passed H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act. This historic vote repeals both the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These Social Security reductions have been in existence since 1983 and 1977 respectively. Your IAFF, along with other labor unions, effectively lobbied both members of the House and Senate to pass this important piece of legislation. While this has required years of work, it is inspiring to see our efforts finally come to fruition.

With the promise by President Biden to sign this bill if it were to make it to his desk, current retired firefighters, as well as those who are making their own plans for their future retirement, will be able to rest easier knowing they will not have their earned Social Security benefits being reduced. Additionally, the spousal benefits for firefighter spouses will no longer be decreased simply because their spouse had earned a government pension.

I couldn’t be prouder of our IAFF’s Government Affairs team, along with the grassroots outreach conducted by our own members. Reaching out to your elected officials in the recent months, weeks, and days leading up to the necessary votes made all the difference. We provided not only effective education but also the necessary encouragement to see this to the end.

Many thanks to those Representatives and Senators who voted in support of the working men and women of this great country. For our union’s staff and leadership, this was a job well done by all. Tonight is most definitely a night to celebrate!

Fraternally,
Michael

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ponca City Firefighters Win Arbitration;
City Violated Collective Bargaining Agreement

PONCA CITY, Okla., Nov. 22, 2024 – Ponca City Fire Fighters prevailed in the arbitration of a violation of collective bargaining agreement by the city, the Professional Fire Fighters of Oklahoma said today.

The dispute arose in January 2024 when the city refused to return unused vacation time to a firefighter and a violation of the CBA was alleged in a contract grievance. In denying the grievance, the fire chief asserted the decision not to return the day of carry-over vacation to the firefighter was proper. The denial of the grievance by the fire chief was taken to arbitration. The arbitrator, M. Zane Lumbley, ordered the city to return the vacation time to the firefighter.

Ponca City Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 2479 and the PFFO’s Lance Haines represent the firefighter.

PFFO President Ricky Burns said, “With collective bargaining, Oklahoma professional firefighters seek a level playing field in the workplace. In return, we deliver excellent service, are good stewards of community resources, and we give back. This arbitration decision is a sensible, cost-effective resolution to this dispute. We hope it is a reminder of the state laws intended to protect employers and employees alike.”

The case is The City of Ponca City and International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2479, AFL-CIO/CLC, FMCS Case No. 230328-04827.
