🫔 GOOD IN GWINNETT: LA MIXTECA TAMALE HOUSE

Some restaurants serve family recipes. La Mixteca Tamale House was built around preserving them.

Founded in Suwanee by the late Rosa Lucia and her daughters, La Mixteca traces its inspiration to the family’s roots in the Mixteca highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico. The Hernandez family learned the demanding art of tamale-making from their mother—and transformed that tradition into one of Gwinnett’s most distinctive locally owned restaurants.

La Mixteca prepares thousands of handmade tamales each week, with 11 different varieties offered daily. Guests can also explore Oaxacan favorites including tlayudas, picaditas and champurrado, along with tacos, tortas, burritos and quesadillas.

Its signature Tamale Bowl takes the restaurant’s specialty in a playful new direction: two tamales topped with rice, beans, crispy potatoes, pico de gallo, queso fresco, cabbage, sour cream and a fried egg.

For preserving a family legacy, introducing more neighbors to the flavors of Oaxaca and building something uniquely local, La Mixteca Tamale House is Good in Gwinnett.

🥧 GOOD IN GWINNETT: CRAVE PIE STUDIO

Sometimes the sweetest new chapters begin when life takes an unexpected turn.

After spending 20 years in the corporate world, Briana Carson was laid off and faced a choice: return to the familiar or pursue something completely different. She enrolled at Gwinnett Technical College to study culinary arts—even though baking was the part she dreaded most.

Then came her final exam: an apple pie made entirely from scratch.

That pie changed everything.

Briana became fascinated by the creativity, seasonality and tradition contained in something so simple. Shortly before her husband, Greg, deployed with the Army National Guard, he surprised her with professional pie-making tools. That encouragement helped turn a newfound passion into Crave Pie Studio.

Since opening in 2010, Crave has become a fixture on Main Street in historic downtown Duluth. Its bakers create sweet and savory pies from scratch using fresh, seasonal ingredients and an all-butter pastry.

The daily selection changes, but longtime favorites include Dutch Apple, Chocolate Chess, Maple Pecan and Chocolate Bourbon Pecan. Visitors can also find seasonal fruit pies, cream pies, quiche, coffee and the especially popular personal-sized pies—because choosing just one flavor is sometimes asking too much.

Crave’s mission reaches beyond dessert. Briana built the shop to bring people together, create new traditions and make the world a little sweeter—one pie at a time.

For turning an unexpected setback into a beloved local business and giving downtown Duluth something uniquely its own, Crave Pie Studio is Good in Gwinnett.

💚 AN UPDATE FROM HAPPZ

After a great deal of thought, we’ve decided to postpone the full launch of Happz that was planned for August 26.

A recent change in our development team, along with several other moving pieces, made one thing clear: launching on schedule would mean launching before Happz is ready. That isn’t the way we want to introduce something we believe can become truly valuable to Gwinnett County.

This is a change in our timeline—not our mission.

We’ll continue building, improving and testing the Happz model with the goal of launching a stronger, more complete platform in 2027.

In the meantime, Happz isn’t going away. We’ll continue using our social pages to share:

🤝 Nonprofits making a difference
📍 The people and places that make our community special

🎬 ONE OF AMERICA’S RAREST MOVIE EXPERIENCES IS RIGHT HERE IN GWINNETT!

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was filmed entirely with IMAX film cameras—and Regal Mall of Georgia is one of only 26 theaters in the country showing it in spectacular IMAX 70mm.

The demand is so intense that the Buford theater has added screenings at some truly epic times—including 3 a.m.

The movie runs 2 hours and 52 minutes and follows Odysseus on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads a cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
