Columbia Gorge Climate Action Network

Columbia Gorge Climate Action Network Confronting the Climate Crisis in the Columbia River Gorge & Beyond! CGCAN is a network of residents from the Columbia River Gorge. It’s our home. It’s about us.

We are alarmed by the political, economic and social forces causing climate change, and we are committed to collective and strategic action that can effectively respond. We love the Columbia River and its surrounding wilderness areas. Many of us live here because we love the Gorge environment. We respect its natural beauty and value a healthful quality of life in this region. The forces behind the

climate emergency threatens our future here. We know this threat extends to communities throughout the world. We’re committed to save it from harm. We work with everyone in our neighborhood as educators about the climate reality. We work with policy makers as citizen-advocates of a sustainable society. Our membership draws from a rich variety of political, philosophical, spiritual, and religious perspectives. We are an intergenerational group. We believe that inclusiveness makes us strong. Standing together, united in purpose, we can do great things. We are confident that the people of the Columbia Gorge can make a difference. Our Mission

The CG-CAN mission is to educate, nurture and organize. Regardless of location, everyone living on our planet needs to be acutely aware of the cause and consequences of climate change. We educate by providing meaningful and engaging content, based on evidence accepted by the scientific community. We are committed to developing solutions to reduce the cause of climate change, and prepare to withstand its inevitable consequences for the Columbia Gorge, for the Pacific Northwest and for the world. We nurture ideas that contribute to solving these problems. We urge friends, neighbors, co-workers, and classmates, as well as our elected officials, to take bold action addressing climate change. We organize events and activities to stimulate their involvement. Mission Work Areas:

- To make polluters pay by putting prices on pollution (carbon control/pricing).
- To work to get individuals and organizations to divest from fossil fuels.
- To stop the extraction, transport and export of fossil fuels – oil, coal & LNG
- To develop carbon neutral, clean and renewable energy at the local community level and organize support for a sustainable and environmentally viable community. Modeling Our Climate Action Goals:

- Collaborating with individuals and organizations throughout the world; we seek a reduction in the global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration to 350 parts per million. To achieve this, we encourage both personal and public policy actions that reduce carbon dioxide emissions from individual to global levels. We need a cultural shift recognizing the threat climate change poses. We are highly-focused, solution-oriented, and prepared for bold action! Meetings

Our meetings are open, collaborative, and expansive:

- We are generous and attentive to thoughtful people and creative ideas.
- We respect differing points of view.
- We work to understand one another, and deeply appreciate the experiences and contributions each person brings to the group.
- Our meetings are uplifting, energetic, and full of stories. We practice thoughtful, honest communication between individuals, and within focus groups + teams as a whole. We are in this together. We value getting things done — bold action.

If you’d like some more info. on electrification join us at Crush Cider Cafe for Pints for the Planet Happy Hour at 4:30 TODAY May 13.

From our homes to our roads, we are in the middle of an energy revolution.

Across the country, people are swapping out gas appliances and vehicles to all-electric alternatives. Why? Because all-electric appliances and vehicles offer the same comforts while lowering bills and reducing pollution.

If you’re new to electrification, check out our latest newsletter - “What is electrification?”

Dear Residents,

As part of our commitment to community resilience, we are inviting local EV drivers to participate in a vital safety study conducted by the University of Washington.

Do you drive an EV?
Researchers are seeking input from EV drivers who live, work, or own property in Central and Eastern Washington—specifically within Skamania, Klickitat, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, Ferry, Benton, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, and Chelan counties.

Your feedback will directly influence future policies on charging infrastructure and emergency response, ensuring that our rural communities remain resilient during wildfire events.

Official Survey Link: https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu
Completion Time: Approximately 25 minutes.
Deadline: May 31, 2026.
Incentive: Complete the survey to enter a drawing for ten $20 or four $50 gift cards.
Thank you for helping us improve wildfire safety and community stewardship in our region.

Best,
Yu-Chen Chu
PhD Student, University of Washington

We had a terrific event last weekend. “Wolverines and EV’s” gave us the opportunity to catch up on all the latest ventures of the charismatic carnivores and to join the dots on one way to help protect their environment …. looking at the benefits of EV’s. A panel of EV drivers talked about their personal experiences with their electric vehicles in use for play and work. Then outside in the glorious sunshine, everyone got an opportunity to look at all the vehicles up close and talk to the drivers in more depth.
Don’t worry if you missed this event CGCAN is getting together at Crush Cider Cafe for Pints for the Planet on Wednesday May 13. 4:30-6. Come join us!

Get the scoop on EV performance from the experiences of local EV drivers and experts at the “Wolverines and EV’s” event tomorrow at Rockford Grange, Hood River.

US gas prices have climbed to a national average of $4.18 per gallon with California drivers getting hammered at nearly $6, and the cost gap between driving electric and driving gas has never been wider. A Tesla Model Y charged at home costs roughly 4 cents per mile while a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, one of the most fuel-efficient gas SUVs on the market, now runs 10.4 cents per mile at current pump prices. That's a 61% saving on fuel alone before factoring in zero oil changes, minimal brake wear and no transmission servicing. For the average American driving 13,500 miles a year the difference works out to roughly $860 in annual fuel savings just by switching to a Model Y, and that number jumps significantly for California drivers paying $6 a gallon. The timing couldn't be better for Tesla which is currently offering 0.99% APR and one year of free Supercharging on new Model 3 orders, effectively removing the two biggest barriers to switching: financing costs and fuel anxiety.

Did you know transportation is Oregon’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and responsible for roughly 35% of the state's total climate pollution. It comes from burning fossil fuels (gasoline and diesel) in cars, trucks, and freight vehicles. Transportation is also the leading cause of climate pollution in Washington state, accounting for nearly 40% to 45% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
If you’ve been thinking of replacing your car at some time, there will be local EV owners at the "Wolverines and EV'S" event (on May 2nd) with their electric cars and trucks to answer your questions They’ll bring information on EVs and sources. For example, there are 300,000 low-mileage EVs coming off lease in the
U.S., which is bringing prices into affordable ranges.

“If you want to save money, save wolverines and Cascades red foxes, and save our ski seasons,” says presenter Eric Strid of CGCAN, “you should drive an electric vehicle".
