💚 Easy to give, Fun to follow! 😁
For just $10, add your favorite plant to our leaderboard during our fundraiser, Plant Promise. Throughout Native Plant Month, watch your plant climb the board!
https://laukahi.org/plant-promise

We suggest a $10 donation so everyone can join in the fun and help us reach our goal of $14,000. Hawaiʻi is home to 1400 native plants and your $10 donation represents our promise to protect every single one.

2 favorite plants are rising to the top!
🌿 Lehua maknoe (Lysimachia daphnoides), a beautiful gem from Kauaʻi, has the most donors so far! Vote for lehua makanoe to keep it at the top!
🌳 ʻŌhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) has the most votes in donated dollars. I think this amazing tree enchants all of us in its many many forms and moʻolelo. Vote for ʻōhiʻa lehua if it's your favorite!

💚 Mahalo! 💚

February is Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month)! 💚Laukahi collaborators and volunteers have been working hard documenting Hawaiian names of our beloved native plants. Check out our progress at https://laukahi.org/target-20/ (also link in bio)!

🌿 Try searching by any keyword in the table and practice ʻōlelo for your favorite plants and places! Here, I searched for ʻākia (knowing it as Wikstroemia) and surprised to learn it is also a Hawaiian name practiced on Niʻihau for Solanum! Then I searched Niʻihau and learned there are many more unique Niʻihau names of plants!

The knowledge that surrounds local innovations associated with native plant resources are invaluable to Hawaiian culture and practice. Some of this knowledge is well-documented in publications and some of this knowledge comes from sources like oral traditions and shared over generations. This is just our first step to document the Hawaiian names of plants with their scientific names and knowledge source. This first step focused on documenting names of plants in the botanical gardens collections (263 species) from a handful of written references. We realize there is still tons of knowledge sources to incorporate into this table, so please let us know how we’re doing and how to make an even cooler online tool to support nā inoa meaulu!

Mahalo to our collaborators, volunteers, and The Garden Club of Honolulu, who all support this project!!

🌱 Kāpana | Phyllostegia hirsuta 🌱
HCA and Laukahi were grateful to join Army Natural Resources Program of Oʻahu (ANRPO) for a recent field day outplanting Phyllostegia hirsuta, a rare native mint threatened by non-native plants and feral pigs. The day also offered the opportunity to experience a beautiful native forest, with sightings of native plants (peahi), ʻelepaio, and kāhuli. Recovery of this kāpana depends on careful monitoring and ongoing management, which can inform and guide future conservation activities. Ex situ collections (such as seed banks and greenhouses) support species recovery, by protecting individuals of plants until threats are managed and their habitat is ready for their return. ANRPO’s work takes them to some pretty tough, remote field sites! Mahalo to the ANRPO team for their mighty efforts protecting our plants and places!

🦋🌺🍺 Beer Release Party! 🍺🌺🦋
Attention PEBM attendees! Hana Koa Brewing Co. is helping us celebrate the Pacific Entomology and Botany Meeting with a special brew - introducing Kolokolo Tunnel Vision, a hazy IPA inspired by Hawai‘i’s native insects and plants. A portion of proceeds from this beer will support conservation efforts that protect Hawai‘i’s native species through the Hawaiian Entomological Society and the Hawai‘i Rare Plant Restoration Group! 💚

Join us for the release party!
📅 Thursday, Dec 4, 2025
🕠 5:30–7:30 PM
📍 Hana Koa Brewing, Honolulu
962 Kawaiahao St., Honolulu, HI 96814

The release party will be a private event for PEBM attendees only. And while we’d love to see all 250 of you here, the event space is best for ~75 attendees (so come early!). If you’re eager to catch up over a pint with a special plant or entomology friend, we recommend RSVP’ing a table at Hana Koa at https://www.hanakoabrewing.com/reservations (link in bio).

Come enjoy a great brew, relax with your conservation friends, and learn about the Pacific Entomology and Botany Meeting!
