Meet the beautiful Koa Butterfly, also known as Blackburn’s Butterfly or the Hawaiian Blue – Udara Blackburnii. The Koa butterfly is one of only two butterfly species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. As caterpillars they love to munch on Koa leaves, hence labeled the Koa Butterfly. Our reforestation activity at Kukaiau on the island of Hawai’i has provided the perfect home for these endemic native species to flourish. Welcome home KB. Spread your wings and fly free.

Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative is honored to be partnered with ‘Alohilani Resorts with a tree planting program that offsets their carbon footprint and has a profound impact in the community and on the environment. Mahalo ‘Alohilani and congratulations!!!

One of the positives to come out of the pandemic is travelers’ deeper consideration of the impact our choices have on the earth, and and an increasing number of visitors to Hawai’i are seeking out experiences at sustainable hotels, from programs to carbon emissions to hyper-local food-sourcing.

‘iliahi (sandlewood) seedlings
The ‘iliahi is a rare tree species driven almost to extinction in the 1800’s in Hawai’i. As we strive to grow a traditional, native endemic Hawaiian forest and ecosystem, we are cultivating many varieties of endemic species, including sandlewood. These ‘iliahi beauties are starting their journey in our nursery and will soon be planted in our forest. Grow ‘iliahi grow!

Sustainable tourism and the importance of traveling responsibly continues to be a major force for Hawaiʻi. The Mālama Hawaiʻi program initiated by the Hawaiʻi Visitor and Convention Bureau (HVCB) in partnership with Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) encourages visitors to make a positive impact when they visit our state. One volunteer project in the program is Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiativeʻs tree planting experience. Recently, Miss Hawaiʻi 2021, Courtney Choy, helped promote that message of making a difference by giving back to help preserve our island home while having an enriching travel experience. Join us! ROTARIANS IN ACTION!!!
The Rotarians’ commitment to the environment was evident this past Saturday when volunteers participated in a Service Day with HLRI. Four groups of 8-12 people per team engaged in pulling weeds, mulching, planting, staking trees, and collecting seeds for propagation. Digging holes and planting seeds are the first important steps, but trees need to be cared for in order to survive and grow to provide benefits like carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and clean water for our earth. Planting large quantities of trees gets attention, but it is the quiet vigilance of caring for them that will provide true benefits to our environment. Mahalo to the Rotarians of District 5000 and their friends and families who care for and nurture the many trees that have been planted.

If not carefully designed or part of a broader carbon management plan, carbon offset projects can have the potential to negatively impact local communities and economies, and biodiversity and other natural resources.

50,000 Trees!

Embassy Suites by Hilton Kapolei and the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) today announced a partnership to plant 50,000 native and endemic Legacy Trees in support of the state’s only Hawaiian Legacy Forest.

“The Legacy Tree program offers a way for everyone to get involved in the reforestation of Hawai‘i. This initiative benefits Hawai‘i’s unique ecosystem, teaches our children about sustainable environmental stewardship, and helps us all learn about the only tropical forests that exist in the United States”, said Reid Yoshida, General Manager of Embassy Suites Kapolei.

“We are seeing the return of the forest and along with it, the endangered birds that historically occupied these lands—it’s remarkable how fast it is happening. This Legacy Forest is creating dozens of permanent green jobs, reducing the effects of climate change and, most importantly, doing it in a way that honors the Hawaiian culture,” said Executive Director Jeff Dunster.

Thank you Embassy Suites for taking action to make a difference and for your valued partnership in our Reforestation efforts!
