FOSC is pleased to have collaborated with the Freshwater Land Trust to make improvements to a vernal pool adjacent to Shades Creek on the Wildwood Preserve. Over 20 volunteers, including several from Samford University and UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham, constructed an earthen ditch plug which will help increase water in a temporary wetland to benefit frogs, salamanders and other forest creatures especially during drought times like we are seeing now. The simple, helpful advice below applies to salamanders that range from Alabama to the northern end of the Appalachian Mountains in Maine. FOSC appreciates all those who help protect habitat and reduce pollutants in our waters.

This remarkable Spotted Salamander overwintered below the frost line and recently emerged during the early spring rains, often traveling hundreds of feet to reach vernal pools where it breeds. They are among the larger salamanders in our region, typically reaching 6–9 inches in length, and occasionally approaching 10 inches.

Individuals commonly live 20+ years and show strong site fidelity, returning to the same pools each year. Although they have simple lungs, much of their oxygen is absorbed directly through their moist, permeable skin. This skin contains specialized mucous and granular glands used for respiration, moisture balance, and toxin production, and is sensitive to environmental vibrations and chemical cues.

Because their skin is so permeable, they are especially vulnerable to pesticides, herbicides, and lawn chemicals, which can be absorbed directly into their bodies and are often fatal even at low levels.

So the next time you reach for lawn chemicals, it’s worth remembering this sweet little face. Even the smallest lives depend on what we choose.✨

Join us this Thursday March 12, 2026 at 7:00pm to hear Nancy Meadows share the incredible 100 year history of Camp Fletcher on our beloved Shades Creek. Camp Fletcher was founded by Pauline Fletcher a black nurse in 1926 and one can only imagine the racial struggles she faced.
Our meeting will be held at Homewood High School in the gym concourse area. You may enter either gym parking lot entrance.
