🌊🐢 Meet our green sea turtle friend, spotted here grazing in the beautiful seagrass beds of Culebrita Island, Culebra, Puerto Rico!
Those distinctive spots on her head and that smooth shell confirm she’s a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas). Unlike most sea turtles, adults are herbivores — you can see her happily munching on seagrass right here!
Quick facts:
• Adults reach 3 to 4 feet long and weigh up to 350 pounds
• They can live 70 to 100 years
• In Puerto Rico, green sea turtles nest from around June through October or November
Green sea turtles are vital to our marine ecosystem — by grazing on seagrass they keep the beds healthy, which benefits coral reefs and all the marine life around them. Sadly, they remain endangered.
Let’s protect our oceans, keep beaches clean, and give these ancient creatures the space they need to thrive. Every small action helps!
