CW: industry retaliation, blacklisting, abuse of power
More than 4,000 actors, directors, writers, and entertainment professionals have signed an open letter opposing the proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Signers include Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Sofia Coppola, Denis Villeneuve, Edward Norton, and our Founder Sarah Ann Masse.
In a new New York Times op-ed, Mark Ruffalo and American Economic Liberties Project research director Matt Stoller revealed that many others privately supported the letter but were too afraid to sign publicly.
The op-ed describes “a deep, ugly and pervasive fear of speaking out” in Hollywood. Ruffalo and Stoller also shared examples of retaliation connected to criticism of the merger, including negative media coverage and pulled advertising.
The merger would further consolidate power in the entertainment industry, reduce opportunities for creators and workers, and leave audiences with fewer choices. The open letter warns that fear and silence grow stronger when industries become more concentrated and unchecked.
At Hire Survivors Hollywood, we know how power imbalances can silence people. When workers fear losing jobs, representation, or opportunities for speaking honestly, accountability becomes harder to achieve.
Today, and always, we stand with artists, workers, whistleblowers, survivors, and Silence Breakers advocating for transparency, fairness, and safer industries.
