We want to hear from YOU, Central Virginia! 💙🏡

As Abide Village continues moving forward, we want to make sure we are listening to the people who live, work, and serve in our community.
On Wednesday, November 12 from 6:30–8:00 PM, we’re hosting a community information and listening session at the Fluvanna County Public Library.

We want to hear from individuals with disabilities, families and caregivers, service providers, businesses, faith communities, and community members. What is needed? What would meaningful, inclusive community living look like here? And how can we work together to make it happen?

This is also a great opportunity to learn more about the vision for Abide Village, ask questions, share your ideas, and find out how you can be part of what we’re building.

🇺🇸 Abide Village Goes to Washington! 🇺🇸

For the past two days, Abide Village Founder & President Erika Rogers and her kids have been in Washington, D.C., advocating alongside the National Down Syndrome Congress and meeting with legislators and their staff about issues that directly impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

This isn’t just policy for our family—it’s personal. ❤️

We shared real-life experiences about the importance of Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), the direct support workforce, employment opportunities, education, and allowing people with disabilities to build a future without outdated financial barriers.

We advocated around four important pieces of federal legislation:
🏡 HCBS Access Act — H.R. 8540 / S. 5321
Expanding access to Home and Community-Based Services and strengthening the direct care workforce.
💰 SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act — H.R. 2540 / S. 1234
Updating SSI’s outdated asset limits so people with disabilities can save for their futures without jeopardizing essential benefits.
💼 Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act — H.R. 4771 / S. 2438
Supporting the transition away from subminimum-wage employment and toward competitive, integrated employment for people with disabilities.
🎓 Protecting the Department of Education — H.R. 10232 / S. 5046
Protecting key Department of Education offices and functions—including those responsible for special education—from being transferred to other federal agencies.

One of the most important parts of advocacy is making sure lawmakers hear directly from the people and families whose everyday lives are affected by the decisions made here in Washington.

We are incredibly grateful to the National Down Syndrome Congress for bringing advocates together and giving families the opportunity to make their voices heard.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending The Arc of Virginia’s State Convention—not only as the Founder and President of Abide Village, but also as a mom and advocate. 💙

I was honored to lead a breakout session and share some of Jessa’s story, along with the lessons I’ve learned about advocacy, education, and what can happen when we help people understand not just what needs to change, but why.

It was wonderful to spend several days surrounded by fellow advocates, families, professionals, and self-advocates who are just as passionate about creating better opportunities and stronger communities for people with disabilities.

So much of the heart behind Abide Village has grown from lived experience—seeing both what is possible and where gaps still exist.
I came home encouraged, inspired, and even more excited about the work ahead.
