Murals turn blank walls into a gallery of lived experience, so neighbors see themselves right where they grab coffee or walk the dog. That’s a community reflected back in color.

Walls can carry voices that don’t always get a mic. When art is created with the people who live here, local identity is celebrated out loud.

San Francisco offers a glimpse of what art can do for a local economy. In one year, the city’s arts scene generated $1.4 billion in economic activity, with audiences spending about $667 million while they were in town. That’s not abstract, it’s meals, rides, hotel stays, and tips in real people’s pockets. Public art isn’t just something to look at, it’s economic development you can feel on the block.

Real stories. Real impact. “After I saw the murals, I finally felt like I belonged here. We've been here, we've always been here, but for the first time as a Latino, we were seen."
- Juan Mascorro resident of the Eastcore

Real stories. Real impact. Hear from Jacqueline Navarrete-Ruano, from Mi Favorita.
“I feel like art brings a sense of community and safety to people. So we have had new people come and say. Hey, I never knew (Mi Favorita) was here. We were attracted by the art”

Did you know....According to Americans for the Arts, every $1 spent on public art can generate about $7 in local economic activity. Why? Murals draw people in. They slow cars, spark photos, and turn quick errands into lingering visits. For small businesses, that foot traffic becomes real sales and for neighborhoods, it’s money recirculating close to home. Paint on a wall isn’t just decoration; it’s economic infrastructure for the block.

Tourists don’t just find cities, they follow murals. Murals do more than brighten a wall, they help cities thrive. Murals attract visitors, guide folks to local shops, and keep dollars circulating close to home, fueling tourism and real economic growth. That’s community impact you can see every time you walk down the block.

Research out of Philadelphia found that when murals go up, crime goes down. Why? Public art can increase foot traffic, strengthen neighborhood pride, and create spaces people want to gather in. One study found areas with murals saw significant drops in daytime and property crime, showing that art isn’t just beautiful, it can be community infrastructure.
This work by Chris Garcia & Congo is more than paint on a wall. It’s place-making. It’s pride. It’s people saying: this space matters.
