Bear Creek Collaborative

Bear Creek Collaborative Providing environmental experiences that are accessible, educational, and recreational for all.

Bear Creek Collaborative (BCC) is a registered 501c3 charitable organization established in 2022 that runs the Bear Creek Education Center at Overton Farm in Hodges, Alabama. This location is barrier-free on approximately 400 acres of land and surrounded by Bear Creek water access. The mission of BCC is to create outdoor experiences that are accessible, educational, and recreational for all. The t

hree pillars of BCC are:

• Accessibility - Bear Creek provides access to the outdoors to promote the well-being for all. Prioritizing accessibility and removing barriers allows everyone the chance to experience the physical, mental, and social benefits of nature. Expanding outdoor access fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment across all backgrounds and abilities.

• Education - Bear Creek organizes and facilitates a learning environment that goes beyond a traditional classroom and encourages multi-sensory and multi-modality participation. Schools, nonprofits, and other groups are provided a hands-on experience where education and play are combined for emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development.

• Recreation - Bear Creek provides outdoor recreation through activities such as kayaking, archery, hiking, and more to help enhance well-being by reducing stress, boosting mood, and fostering a deeper connection with nature and an overall sense of adventure. Our offerings include field trips, day and overnight camps, and customized group outings tailored for K-12 schools, homeschool groups, colleges, scout troops, and other groups and organizations. Participants can engage in activities such as curriculum-based learning, outdoor recreation, environmental education, creative arts, mindfulness practices, and team-building exercises. By immersing individuals in nature, we aim to reduce stress, enhance communication skills, and promote a sense of connection to the environment. Our programs are adaptable to meet the unique needs of each group, ensuring a purposeful and impactful experience for all. This mother’s words about her son’s experience at Bear Creek is just… whew. ❤️

“Jaxon had the best experience with Bear Creek Collaborative! He has autism, so I was worried at first, but after I heard how accommodating and fantastic the staff was with him, I couldn’t have been more excited for him! He loved everything about it, especially the archery and rope course! He was able to participate in everything and was never held back because of his autism. I’m so glad there is a fun place for kids with different abilities!”

And when we tell you that Jaxon was a rockstar, we mean that he approached everything we did with so much confidence and determination.

Today is one of the most special days of the year because it’s Wyatt’s birthday! 🎉 We joke that we just do whatever he says, but the truth is that we wouldn’t be where we are without him. Everything that you see or do during a camp has likely been created or influenced by him in some way.

Help us wish him the happiest birthday today! With endless amounts of dessert. 😜

Last year, with the help of the Tennessee Valley Authority, we hosted two of our nonprofit friends for a day of outdoor exposure and introducing their youth to some unique TVA departments. Starting today, and throughout the rest of July, we get to do it all over again - but this time with FOUR nonprofit groups!

One thing we weren’t prepared for last year was the amount of personal growth that would happen in one short day. Opportunity is everything.

Last Friday, we got to take a little field trip to WaterWorks Environmental Learning Lab in Hartselle and when we tell you our wheels are SPINNING with new ideas! What an incredible space they have created out of an old water treatment plant. We’re hoping to get their staff over to our neck of the woods soon too! 🐸

What a beautiful location and a fun group of people! Wild Alabama's Bankhead Stewardship Coordinator was thrilled to teach a Leave No Trace Level One class at Bear Creek Collaborative Environmental Center this past Thursday and Friday. We all learned a lot from each other, and had good laughs, thoughtful moments, and great connections with the environment. I really enjoyed teaching this class to such an exceptional group of folks!

Training day! Some of our staff and others throughout the state are spending the next couple of days getting certified as Level 1 instructors for Leave No Trace. We’ll be able to add this to our list of programming for groups that are interested.

Shoutout to Wild Alabama for being here to facilitate!

Yes, we will absolutely play a team building game on a log. The first group of Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Junior Leaders crushed it yesterday!

Two more rounds of Junior Leaders are coming up this month and they have big shoes to fill.
