This young red tailed hawk was found sitting on a swinging bridge in Monroe county. Exam shows no injuries, but he is a little thin - not unusual with an adolescent his age. We will run some bloodwork today..

It is that time of year again when young American Kestrels get out of their nests and start learning how to be a kestrel. They are cute as can be and still have remnants of baby fuzz here and there. PLEASE, unless they are injured, please leave them alone. They wind up in unusual places frequently, but unless there is an immediate threat (like getting run over with a car) leave them alone. Cats don't mess with them in our experience. If they are in a dangerous situation, gently move them out of it and place them in safety nearby, preferably under a bush or some other cover. This little female goes back home today.

The 3 baby barred owls from Cabell county are doing great and growing up! Their nest tree was felled a few weeks back and they have been in a nest box looked after by our Ambassador Barred Owls Willow and Riffle. The youngsters are adult enough to start coming out of the cavity on their own and hang out with the adults now and again. Pretty soon we can introduce them to wild adults in rehab who can foster them out in the wild when release time comes. It will be a few weeks yet!

This young red morph Eastern Screech Owl was rescued from a gravel road in Raleigh county on Saturday morning. He had been sitting in the same spot for over 24 hours. Exam shows a concussion, always a worrisome injury in young birds with developing brains. During his first night at Three Rivers Avian Center he started coughing up what should have been pellets, but were made up entirely of insect legs!! He was certainly trying to survive just on insects, but he was really hungry!! He has been enjoying being able to eat mice here, that is for sure. The finders named him Edward.
