Trauma can look different for every person. For individuals with disabilities, experiences such as bullying, loss, divorce, frightening medical procedures, accidents, violence, or sudden changes can deeply impact their sense of safety.
For individuals with cognitive, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, trauma may feel even more overwhelming. Changes in routine, sensory sensitivities, difficulty processing emotions, and dependence on trusted adults can intensify fear and uncertainty. What may seem manageable to others can feel life-altering to them.
But healing and growth are possible. Growth does not erase pain or mean the experience was acceptable. It means that with the right support, patience, and understanding, individuals can rebuild trust, regain confidence, and develop strength for the future.
