Indigenous memories recently met with family members in Surry County, VA to give guidance on caring for the Mason Family Cemetery.

A 10 minute walk through a farmer’s wheat field is necessary to access this site. The most recent family members were buried here in the 1960’s. There is also a large area of Vinca (Periwinkle) growing which is indicative in slave burial grounds as this ground cover serves as a lasting “living” marker that survives today.

They are extremely thankful to learn how to manage and care for their ancestors final resting place.

This month, our staff has been learning more about and reflecting on the rich history of the Eno and how people of color have contributed to this amazing place through reading “Ribbons of Color: The History of African Americans and People of Color Living Along the Eno River” together.

Through these journals, Black and Indigenous histories of the Eno River are brought to the forefront to honor the voices and experiences that have shaped the Eno watershed. Ribbons of Color contains first and second-hand stories of those who have long lived in the Eno watershed, with articles gathered from interviews, first-person narratives, and family lore of a dozen authors.

If you are curious about any of these histories, feel free to read along and check out more information here 👉 https://shop.enofest.org/products/coverscan-png-eno-journal-ribbons-of-color-the-history-of-african-americans-and-people-of-color-living-along-the-eno-river

Profits from the sales of Ribbons of Color journals will be split evenly between Eno River Association and Beverly Scarlett's charity of choice, Indigenous Memories.
