August 15th in Italy is a national holiday, and it's called "Ferragosto".
📜 The history: back in 18 BC, Emperor Augustus of Rome invented Feriae Augusti, because even ancient Romans knew that working in 104°F heat was a human rights violation.
🌇The desertification: Rome, Milan, and every Italian city turn into ghost towns where tumbleweeds roll past locked shop doors bearing the sign: "Chiuso per ferie" (Closed for holidays).
🍕The Ferragosto lunch: it is a legal requirement to consume your body weight in grilled meat (grigliata), watermelon, and cold w**e while arguing loudly with your extended family about politics.

📌Ciao Hickory began in 2023 as a simple group of friends and a page dedicated to the Italian community in Hickory; over the years, it has grown into a vibrant hub to celebrate Italian heritage through a variety of events, classes, and gatherings.
🎉 The nonprofit organization of Ciao Hickory was founded in the summer of 2025, and in October 2025, thanks to a wide group of volunteers, has organized what has been the very first Italian Festival for Hickory.

Our 8-weeks Italian language program for adults has ended this past May, and we look forward to start another round of classes soon! 🇮🇹
Thanks to all the attendees and thanks to Libreria Bookstore for providing us a cozy space for our lessons, surrounded by books and art 🥰

Ciao Hickory is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve Italian culture and heritage by offering classes and events, and creating experiences that connect people, sharing Italian traditions, language, food, art, music and more; our group has an all-volunteers base and we try to bring a piece of Italy right here, in Hickory.
