The turtle in our logo honors the Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina, one of four threatened turtles in the White River Watershed. The other three are the Blandings, Spotted, and Wood turtles.

“Terrapene” was also the name of WRWP’s original newsletter. With our newsletters making a bit of a comeback, it felt right to bring the name back, too!

The two expressions of macroinvertebrate community health shown in previous posts---the Shannon Diversity Index and the MiCorps Water Quality Rating---show a degree of correlation for the Fall 2025 dataset. This correlation is shown in the accompanying chart. While the correlation does not necessarily imply causality, it is reasonable to expect greater community diversity to go hand-in-hand with higher stream quality. Any negative factors such as pollutants would act to lower both indices.

Twice yearly, WRWP volunteers survey the macroinvertebrate community at a handful of sites in the watershed using protocols from the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps). Organisms are identified to the biological order level. Each order is assigned a factor related to its sensitivity to adverse conditions. The sensitivity factors and abundances are combined to produce a Water Quality Rating Score (details at micorps.net). The accompanying chart illustrates the results for the six sites sampled in Fall 2025.
