Not every action reflects a person's thoughts, intentions, or desires.

For many Apraxic and nonspeaking individuals, many behaviors are driven by motor, sensory, emotional, or regulatory challenges rather than purposeful communication.

When a person becomes overwhelmed by sensory input, motor demands, emotions, or cognitive load, the nervous system can become dysregulated.

In these moments, the body may react in ways that appear sudden, impulsive, intense, or confusing. These reactions are often not intentional messages. Instead, they are signs that the nervous system is overwhelmed and struggling to regain regulation.

Understanding this distinction can help us respond with greater empathy, support, and respect.

The Communication Equity Campaign is proud to continue it's poetry series that celebrates nonspeaking BIPOC spellers who love to write poetry.

This series by the Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network is a series we can all enjoy and get to discover the talented poets among us.

Next up, we have a poem by Swarit Gopalan.

"My name is Swarit, and I am a 13-year-old nonspeaking autistic advocate, published author, and second-generation Indian American living in a multi-generational household in Palm Harbor, FL. I enjoy poetry, music, and cooking. A couple of years ago, when I began my communication journey through spelling on a letter board, I could never have imagined that something like this would be possible. Yet it has always been my dream to share my story and perspectives more broadly—to help free voices like mine from the prisons they are in. My hope is that my words will help change the world from one of sympathy and pity for those like me to one of deeper understanding of our lives and allyship to ensure our rights."

Are you a nonspeaker or S2C practitioner? Fill out the Communication Equity Survey at the link in our bio!

New S2C lesson! ✏️

Can A Doll Change The Way We Think?
Written by Emma Gamblin

This lesson explores the new Autistic Barbie and how inclusive toys can help children feel represented and accepted. While many people praise the doll for raising awareness of autism and promoting inclusion, others believe it may rely on stereotypes and cannot represent every autistic person's experience. This lesson also explains the importance of diversity in toys, showing how companies like Barbie and Lego have adapted to better reflect society and encourage empathy, confidence, and understanding among children.

Is that... the United Nations???
YES IT IS!

Representing I-ASC at the United Nations this week as delegates from around the world gather for the Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The CRPD is an international human rights treaty that affirms the rights of people with disabilities to full participation, inclusion, autonomy, and equal opportunity in all aspects of life. Each year, governments, organizations, advocates, researchers, and self-advocates come together at COSP to discuss progress, challenges, and priorities related to implementation of the Convention.

I-ASC is here because communication access is fundamental to the realization of many of these rights. Access to education, employment, community participation, self-determination, and leadership all depend on the ability to communicate. As an organization dedicated to increasing communication access for nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals, it is important that we engage in these global conversations and contribute our perspective on the role communication plays in creating a more inclusive world.
