A Land Remembered — Still Alive
Florida’s cattle story runs deep. Long before theme parks and subdivisions, this was a ranching state — one of the oldest cattle frontiers in America. Spanish cattle arrived here more than 500 years ago, and generations of Florida cowboys learned to work the wetlands, palmetto prairies, and wide open country in a way that is uniquely our own.
This image was made north of Okeechobee, where I was invited to film a cattle drive. Watching the cowboys ride and work the herd felt like stepping into a scene straight out of A Land Remembered. The dust, the calls, the movement of the cattle… it’s hard work, and it’s beautiful work.
What stays with me most is that these aren’t reenactments. These are families who are still here, still working this land, still holding on to a tradition that helped shape Florida long before most people ever imagined it the way it is today.
I’m grateful to witness it, and even more grateful to photograph it.
Remember to remember.
