The Altrusa International Club of Hermiston has joined forces with Merry Meridional soaps to support Surge for Water, a nonprofit organization bringing safe water through drilling wells and comprehensive sanitation solutions to villages in Haiti, Indonesia and Uganda. Merry Meridional has created a fragrance and designed a special look (below) reflecting the Altrusa Club of Hermiston. A portion of every sale of this specific soap will go to the club’s International Relations Committee to forward to Surge for Water.

Congratulations to the Hermiston Kiwanis Club for winning the 2026 Battle of the Books competition April 14. The competition is hosted by the Altrusa International Club of Hermiston each year and pits four teams against each other in a battle of memory and comprehension after reading six children’s books. Challenging the Kiwanis in battle this year were the Hermiston Rotary Club, the Hermiston Lions Club and Catholic Daughters. The Kiwanis Club won $250 but graciously gave the prize money back to Altrusa for its local literacy projects. For the third straight year, the Rotarians were voted the Most Popular Team. Proceeds from the event will go toward Altrusa’s Little Free Library project, the Read and Walk Trail at Riverfront Park and free books for children.

The Altrusa Club of Hermiston has finished its latest International Relations project with a lot of help from students of the Irrigon Junior Senior High School Leadership Class. The students helped gather items for Lifting Hands International which provides cold-weather gear, hygiene kits and school supplies for refugees worldwide. Thanks to the students, the club was able to send off 170 pounds of goods including 73 complete hygiene kits, 200 mini hygiene kits, 15 completed school kits, 13 completed winter kits, and 51 incomplete kits needing only 1 or 2 items, 29 extra washcloths, 6 incomplete winter kits and 30 extra beanies. LHI received the items and sent Altrusa a handwritten thank-you card.

The Altrusa International Club of Hermiston is pleased to offer scholarships for students nearing completion of their post-high school program. Scholarship awards are up to $3,000, with a Spring and Fall Cycle each year. The funds can be applied toward tuition, books, and/or lab fees.
The scholarships in each cycle were established in honor of Hermiston Altrusans who were heavily involved in local education.
● The Dorothy Juve Memorial Scholarships (Spring) honor a longtime administrator and educator in the Hermiston School District.
● The Linda Gilleese Memorial Scholarships (Fall) honor an avid community volunteer who served many years on the Hermiston School District’s Board of Directors.
