Seven Months and One Day Since Hurricane Helene: A Personal Reflection
Today marks seven months and one day since Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina.
It’s hard to put into words how much has changed. Homes were destroyed. Familiar roads and places were swept away. What once felt steady and sure suddenly became fragile. And yet, through it all, something even stronger began to take root—resilience.
These past months have been some of the hardest I’ve ever experienced. There were moments of heartbreak, of frustration, of wondering how we would move forward. But there were also moments of hope—small at first, but growing every day.
Hope in the hands that reached out to help.
Hope in the neighbors who showed up when it mattered most.
Hope in the quiet courage it takes to keep going when everything feels broken.
Recovery hasn’t been easy, and it’s not over yet. Some days it feels like we take two steps forward and one step back. But we are here. We are rebuilding—not just buildings and roads, but a deeper kind of strength within ourselves and our community.
If these past 7 months and 1 day have taught me anything, it’s that true strength isn’t about standing tall without falling. It’s about getting back up—again and again—with faith that tomorrow can be better.
We are stronger than any storm.
And we’re just getting started.
