It's nice to be able to post pictures here again. Soooo much to catch up on from the last few weeks.
We'll fast forward to yesterday. This is new kid Toasty. We saved him from the dreaded transfer list at The Animal Foundation on May 6th. On May 5th at 1pm I glanced at a post that popped up in my feed and saw a scared boy, that was being pet in a TAF foster home, had scratched a person and was returned. That is an automatic death sentence unfortunately, no matter how sweet the animal is. Don't even get me started. I know. Ludicrous. But that's how our shelter works. π‘
I saw that he was going to die in 2 hours. I hopped on the computer and requested him. All I knew at the time was that information along with he was 5 years old, gray and he was not fixed yet (again, don't get me started. I know π€). I missed the email at 2:40 asking if I really did want him, along with a little bit more information. I didn't even read the rest. I didn't need to. When I saw at 5pm that I'd missed the email my heart sank. I feared that I had missed the opportunity to save him, but thankfully I did not. Because it was so late in the day I asked if they could fix him and we could pick him up the next day. They thankfully agreed. π
I got there the next day as scheduled and AS SOON AS I got him in the car I noticed something wrong with his eyes. π³π€―πΏ We've saved over 1300 kitties in 10 years and even though he was still coming out of the end of anesthesia, I knew that it wasn't related to that. Anger set it. Grrr. There was not a speck of information about something being wrong with this kid's eyes. And with that I knew that that's the reason why he had scratched someone. I wasn't sure if he could see but the poor kid was just terrified. Terrified cats the kids that we work with when other rescues and shelters won't or don't. Of course there are too many of these but here we were with this sweet, scared boy.
I let him recover for about 5 days then off we went to see the amazing Dr. Hayes at our vet. She decided to keep him overnight to assess him. She said there was definitely something wrong with his eyes. She said the eye pressure was around 40. That is not good and she suspected glaucoma. Sigh. We ended up getting him a snap test which was thankfully negative/negative. She said he could see but she just wasn't sure how much and referred us to an ophthalmologist. π We have one. He's I think kitty #7 for an eye specialist.
Fast forward to yesterday. Off we went for his appt. Instantly Dr.Brinkman said "Ahhh. Yep. Glaucoma." Then after about 90 minutes of a tutorial on animal eyes and cat eyes specifically, he said our Toasty has peripheral vision but he cannot see straight on. ππ Doc says it's about 20% at this time. He does not need surgery nor does he need drops at this time. Thank goodness!! Doc isn't sure if he was born like this or it just happened. Poor Toasty. They were going to kill him. He was just acting out of fear because he couldn't see.
Toasty is very sweet but he's a shy guy who needs a furrever home that is on the darker side (not bright light) and one that will flatten him up. He's too thin even though he's been eating well with us. We are looking for a special needs home for this. Very sweet boy. We have a follow-up appointment for him on September 10th. He can absolutely be adopted now. But short-term we are looking for at least a foster for him. If your home is super bright, even though you might want to help us with him, it would have to be adjusted as lots of bright light is going to hurt his eyes. He will get around better with it being darker and we just want him to be a cat.
TAF named him Asta. Yuck. We also found out after picking him up that he was a police confiscate. That's all we know about that. So he had a home of some kind and lost that home in March. We're not sure if he's been around other pets but we're pretty sure as long as it's a living home with TLC he will adapt well with a little time.
We here at NBL are not equipped for special needs as we are a foster based rescue. PLEASE reach out to us if you think you have a space (small is ok initially) and can help us with him. We'd really like to move him this coming weekend. He's absolutely healthy otherwise. We think he's probably skinny because he didn't know how to get to the food with his bad eyesight, which probably made him shy and scared to search for food. π₯
Who's going to be this sweet boy and our next HERO? Is it you? π
*I'll be adding his bills from the 2 vets in the next few hours. We're at $500 ish in less than a month for this kid. π© He's not our only kitty, by a longshot. We could really use some help with vet bills. If you know us, we HATE to ask for $ but that's the only way we can help any kitties.
