Absent parents always seem to have a million excuses for why they can't be bothered with their kids.

It's always someone else's fault, right? I mean, who needs personal responsibility when you can just blame the world?

Oh, and that child support bill? Totally exaggerated. The child support office is just out to get them, apparently.

No wonder they get labeled as deadbeat parents.

And let's be real, just because you contributed to the creation of a human being doesn't mean you're automatically a parent. That's just basic biology.

The things you hear, right? Makes you wanna shake your head.

L.E.O. will always have my support, we can't focus on the bad ones because there are so many good ones out there. That is the same in any profession. Love you guys, be safe, and I am always here if y'all ever need me.

Unfortunately, our profession sometimes gets a bad reputation as our primary duties are enforcing the laws, which often leads to someone being upset with us. This Christmas morning, I want to share two stories that book end my time in law enforcement, there are literally hundreds of others in between.

My first story happened early in my career with the Henderson Police Department, back in the mid-90’s. Sgt. Gene Cooper, who is no longer with us, was the training sergeant at the department and he had a trustee from the jail assigned to him to help wash the police vehicles. The trustee was a state prisoner from the eastern part of the state who was in the Henderson County Detention Center for dealing drugs. His wife had their first baby while he was in jail and as us officers got to know him, he would give us updates on his baby and he was very excited to meet her. Sgt Cooper took up a collection around the department, and bought presents and wrapping paper for the prisoner to be able to give presents to his wife and daughter. He was very emotional over this and was very appreciative.

The second story has taken place over the past few days. One of our officers made a traffic stop and learned the vehicle had been in a wreck recently, he further learned the family had been the victim of a theft. They mentioned another officer that they had filed a report with. The mom was a passenger in the vehicle and recognized the officer from working a side job at the high school when she was a student. They had five kids and because of recent events, they didn’t have money for Christmas. The officer took it upon himself to start a collection around the department. Several officers and their families went shopping on their own and others donated money for another group of officers to go shopping. Then the officers wrapped all of the presents and delivered them to the family.

None of the officers wanted recognition, but I want our community to realize how lucky we are to have public servants with hearts like theirs. I’ve seen it throughout my career in both Henderson and Evansville. The below picture is what was delivered to this family.

Merry Christmas everyone!
